Very rare UK export pressing of the US Something New LP on Parlophone (CSPS 101). This was the first of three US Capitol Beatles titles issued by Parlophone for export, to be sold atmilitary bases.
On page 335 of his book “Beatles for Sale on Parlophone Records”, Bruce Spizer identified several variations of this LP.
This copy is identified as PAREX 101.SR3A(ii) (pictured on the upper left of page 337), based on the following description:
- Black & yellow Parlophone labels
- Does not have the ”SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO...” text
- Has “THE GRAMOPHONE CO. LTD...” perimeter print
- Has the correct YEEX.8 matrix number on the Side 2 label.
Visually, I’ll call the vinyl VG. It still has most of its shine, but there are play marks and light scratches - it was used and enjoyed by its original owner, but not abused.
Cover condition is also VG. Typical of its time, It’s the flimsy posterboard construction, laminated on the front - so it has several creases. There’s yellowing and a couple of stains on the back, and a couple of areas of the seams that have small tears.
As mentioned in the Spizer book, there is a $2.50 price sticker adhered directly to the cover.
The package also has a lined EMI inner sleeve, promoting the use of its “Emitex” record cleaning cloth.
Far from a perfect copy, but certainly a rare piece and an interesting slice of Beatles history.
