This is an auction for THE BEATLES RUBBER SOUL
a rarer 'transitional' first press copy / MONO LP in Excellent condition
Produced on the YELLOW and BLACK PARLOPHONE label.
Serial number PMC 1267
Matrix numbers are 579 - 4 / 580 -1
(This LP features a very unusual MIX OF THE THE SOUGHT AFTER Loud Cut MIX ON SIDE 2 AND THE TONALLY ADJUSTED Re-MIX ON SIDE 1).
Mothers / stampers are : 'a' side 4 / G3G 'b' side GTO / LR
AN UNUSUAL PRESSING .... but why?
The very first pressings of Rubber Soul had a studio mix which was soon considered to be not good enough. First pressings carry matrix numbers ending with " -1" on both sides and are normally referred to as the "Loud" cut. But this mix was discontinued after a very short run when it was realised it was tonally unbalanced with vocals sounding thin, which made it sound aggresive and edgy (so known as loud, but not really). It was therefore withdrawn for a good reason.
The First Pressing was therefore very quickly corrected and the Matrix numbers were changed to end in " - 4". But it is not commonly understood that during this changeover, there were some copies incorrectly distributed which had the discontinued 'loud cut' mix on one side and the modified version on the reverse. So you will find some with XEX 579-1 coupled with XEX 580-4 and others as XEX 579-4 coupled with XEX 580-1. They are VERY RARE and they were not intended for release.
THIS COPY which is now on offer - WITH MATRIX 579-4 / 580-1 features the original "Loud cut" mix on side 2 but the corrected mix on the 'a' side It is therefore very difficult to find one of these 'transitional' copies. Have you seen another of these unusual mixed 'mix' releases? Probably not!
Apart from all the unusual features of this LP, it plays FABULOUSLY, starting with very quiet run-ins and then audio which has very little background noise whatsoever - just a couple of the LIGHTEST of POPS! No Sticks, no hesitations, no jumps and even on the quieter tracks, background noise is not an issue - it really is that good.
I have confidence in describing it as EXCELLENT, with just light spindle marks to spoil a near immaculate appearance. It lays absolutely flat on the turntable and SUPERBLY!
Whether a first or second pressing, IT IS SO HARD TO FIND an early pressing of Rubber Soul THAT IS NOT WORN OUT OR DAMAGED! This is a copy that is neither of those things.
Even though the pressings of each side are 'mixed' both the labels carry 'The Gramaphone Co' text (which was not on the Loud Cut pressing) and 'SOLD IN THE UK' statement. Both labels are clean with no damage and no writing etc.
ALSO - While many pressings featured a 'sans serif' font, this copy uses TIMES font on both sides.
THE SLEEVE is in good condition too. An E J DAY front laminated sleeve featuring the 'loose thread' on Johns jacket sleeve, which only appeared on the first sleeves - later sleeves had the fabric damage airbrushed out. The flipbacks on the back are secure and have no damage. BUT there is staining on the unlaminated back and a card crease under the laminate on the front. The spine is intact with no splits, a comment which applies to all the seams - all intact. It has a square spine. So apart from the references made earlier this is a sleeve that has survived OK in its 47 year life.
THE INNER SLEEVE is lined EMITEX with a circular die-cut centre and is complete, but with some light creasing via handling.
I played both sides of this record while I was listing it and it is a GREAT MUSICAL EXPERIENCE - such is the clean nature of the audio. IT IS HUGELY PLAYABLE AND BETTER THAN MOST COPIES YOU WILL FIND
- I am not promoting this as an archive vinyl though.
So there you have it - A rare / unusual mix of pressings not intended for release, a really excellent audio presentation and a sleeve (that while not perfect by a long way) is whole, not torn, has no writing, and no bad damage.
