Description
Greetings,
For sale today we have a very special record indeed - 1 of 300 first edition, mono LP's of The Beatles "Please Please Me" ever pressed at the EMI Records pressing plant in Hayes, Middlesex, UK on the 22nd March, 1963 ...
The key aspect which makes this particular record so unique is that due to a manufacturing error, both sides of the record have a side 1 label impressed on them. The record itself plays correctly with the full 14 song programme spread across both sides but as can be seen in the photos, on side 2, an identical side 1 label was impressed during the manufacturing process. This is the first copy of this record we've ever found bearing this manufacturing error and is perhaps the first of it's kind to be offered up for sale. In conjuction with the LP being one of the first 300 mono copies of "Please Please Me" to ever be pressed, this record is a true one-of-a-kind.
Below are some key details of this particular record for sale:
- Matrixes: Side 1: XEX 421 - 1N Side 2: XEX 422 - 1N
- Labels: First pressing black label with gold print and “The Parlophone Co. Ltd” text on the perimeter. “Dick James Mus. Co” incorrect publishing credits for “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Misery”, “Do You Want To Know A Secret” & “There’s A Place”. No tax code on either label! Identical Side 1 label on each side with side 2's label impressed off-centre. While the side 2 label is imprinted off-centre, the record itself is perfectly centred and plays with no horizontal "swaying" arm movement on either side.
- Stampers: Side 1: "1 G", Side 2: "1 R" signifying this record was one of 300 pressed on the very first day of production, 22nd March 1963!
Outer sleeve: Correct first pressing gold sleeve with "Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd. London" printing credit on rear bottom right corner. The beginning of the photo credit on the front bottom right is aligned to where the blue "s" of "songs" ends above it.
Grading:
Vinyl: VG+ Due to the rare nature of this LP, we play tested it from beginning to end prior to sale. The record is confidently graded as a strong VG+. A little high frequency hiss is audible during the run-in on side 1 and disappears when the music begins. Very minor background crackle is audible between songs. Both sides play back without pops, clicks or skips. Bass is tight and resonant, mids are punchy and highs are clear with space. Side 2 plays back with perhaps a touch more background crackle in parts than Side 1. Record surfaces have some light marks, none are feelable or deep.
The listening experience is an absolute joy and this copy really does sound wonderful :)
Labels have some spindle wear and the side 2 label has a small area of discolouration from what looks like a sticker removal. There is also a small area of worn away paper on the side 2 label. The spindle hole allows for a little movement but the record plays perfectly centred on both sides. The record is perfectly flat with no warping or dishing.
Inner sleeve: VG+ Original EMITEX tracing paper inner sleeve in lovely shape with no damage, tears or splits :)
Outer sleeve: GOOD Outer sleeve has a split to the spine (14cm), edge wear, a tear to the back on the text area and some staining from water/humidity damage at some point. The sleeve is now completely dry and free of any kind of mould. Minor waviness to the cardboard but not severe at all. Sellotape stain marks to rear (sellotape since removed) and the start of small tear to opening edge half way up. Sleeve will come housed in a PVC wallet with a thin cardboard spacer separating it from the record, itself housed in its original inner. Overall the sleeve is a tidy and presentable example. Please see photos for details.
