Up for auction here is the very first pressing of the first Beatles album, released on Parlophone and of course this one has much sought after black and gold label. These are normally offered in fairly rough condition, but this one is pretty good! The Cataloge number is PMC 1202 and the stamper/matrix numbers are as follows:
Side One: XEX 421-1N Side Two: XEX 422-1N
Because of the rarity and desireability of this album I will describe the condition as carefully as possible.....
I have examined this album under a very strong bare, clear bulb and would say it's in very good shape, there are a few light hairlines on it but no serious scratches, and therefore, for a record of this age, overall I would rate it as Excellent or at least a very very strong VG++ The only flaw I can find is a smallish mark on side one, track two. It isn't a scratch but a small dull spot or maybe scuff. It may even clean out but I'll leave that to the buyer. I have included a pic of it circled in red. This aside it's without doubt one of the cleanest copies I've ever seen on ebay. Unfortunately I can't play grade it as I no longer have a turntable, but it looks like it should play very well.
The sleeve (printed by Ernest J Day) is perfectly presentable, and from the front looks very good. The flipbacks are fine except for a small (2cm) scuff at the bottom of the top one (see pics), and there are no seam splits whatsoever, and no laminate lifting. However, there is some staining on the back cover, and a name has been written at the top. Also, the cover has a slightly wavy feel as if it might have got damp at some point. Anyway, I'm going to grade the sleeve as good only, though you will see from the pics that it's ok for its age.
Just for the hell (or fun?) of it I'm going to start this one at £1 with no reserve and see where it goes!!!

This one (as you will see from the pics) has the Northern Songs Credits. The value of both pressings in 'The Record Collector' is £750. Which would suggest equal rarity.
