THE BEATLES - PLEASE PLEASE ME

A rare and sought after copy (especially in condition as impressive as this) of this 1963 UK rarer fourth pressing on the UK yellow/black Parlophone label, MONO PMC 1202

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  XEX 421 - 1N with stampers "2" and "1.1 L" at 9 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively

Side 2  XEX 422 - 1N with stampers "1 2" and "AL" at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock respectively

In normal daylight the appearance of the vinyl is stunning. Completely flat and very heavy duty, and when viewed in normal daylight still retaining it's original beautiful glossy and jet black lacquered sheen - a real "gleamer". Even under a bright light source it is only a few very wispy hairlines and very light, small paper scuffs that come in to view - all very few and far between, all superficial, nothing "feelable" and a clear indication that this record has had far less than the "normal" number of plays expected for a 55 year old classic such as this. I have no hesitation in grading the overall condition of the vinyl as a strong excellent.

The labels are near perfect with the only blemishes being a couple of very faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label. All silver text, and of course the iconic yellow "PARLOPHONE" and logo, sit perfectly upon the equally perfect matt black textured background. Note the presence of "THE PARLOPHONE Co..." text on the label perimeter, the absence of the "Recording first published 1963" text and of course the "K" and "T" tax codes sitting nice and proud on the side 1 label, all indicators of a genuine sought after fourth pressing.

The front-side laminated and flip back Ernest J. Day outer sleeve is a solid very good (VG). All edges, including the spine, remain nice and firm with the only scuffing being a 5mm "nick"/scuff on the top edge.The corners remain nicely defined right angles but there is some mild rubbing on each. There are a couple of very light, strictly surface only, small laminate creases on the front side but these are really minor and do not detract from the excellent, vibrant colouring on the front side. The reverse side would be excellent were it not for a hand written signature written in ink towards the top edge and the hand written track timings, again in ink, written neatly beside each track name. My photos show all of this writing. The only other blemish of note on the reverse side is what seems to be a flip back fold which has been stuck back on in the bottom right corner, and some leftover residue from a sticker on the top edge (see photos).  Note that the "Ernest J. Day" credit in the bottom right corner further authenticates this as a 5th pressing.

Finally, the quality of the audio is truly excellent+ (EX+)! There are no pops, no clicks, no skips, and from the second the stylus is placed onto the vinyl to the instant it is removed there is no background crackle/interference whatsoever. Outstanding! Fabulous MONO tone and clarity throughout with absolutely no distortion, even at higher frequency and higher volume. Every track on this wonderful LP makes for a great listen.

Comes with original  "USE EMITEX CLEANING CLOTH..." tracing paper lined, die-cut inner sleeve with no splits, tears or edge fraying  - just some minor age discolouration, and in overall excellent condition and remaining 100% fully functional. Note that I always post the record in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.

In summary a truly VERY GOOD PLUS (I'm sure that many would class as "excellent") copy of this rare and sought after 1963 UK 4th pressing MONO Beatles classic, the highlight being the excellent condition of the vinyl and accompanying superb MONO audio quality - deserving to grace any Beatles record collection and only continuing to gain in value.

I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
