The Beatles Original 1963 UK Please Please Me Mono LP PMC 1202 -- the BLACK GOLD and NORTHERN SONGS rare 2nd pressing.
I bought this album shortly after it first came out in March 1963. Apart from recent checking, it has been unplayed for roughly 40 years and has been carefully stored. Overall it is still in very good/excellent condition. The disc has no warping, looks fresh and all tracks sound very good/excellent with no skips or clicks and little surface noise (one small pop on Please Please Me), in spite of some surface scuff/scratch marks. Would probably sound even better with a good clean.
The flip edge cover is clean and in very good condition, with some minor creasing but no disk marks. The front cover has “Photo: Angus McBean” aligned with the end of the words “other songs”. The back cover includes the “Recording first published 1963” and “Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd London” at the bottom right edge. It has some minor tears on the bottom edge and corners with a name (mine) neatly printed at the top (see the pictures). The disk sleeve is the clean original polythene lined “Use ‘Emitex’” version, with some yellowing and creasing in the 4 corners.
This is a 1st Mother pressing with the following marks:
Side 1: Matrix XEX 421-1N Mother: 1 Stamper: H
Side 2: Matrix XEX 422-1N Mother: 1 Stamper: T
The labels are the 1963 Black Gold Parlophone originals with “The Parlophone Co. Ltd. – All rights etc.” on the outer rim and tax stamp MT across the spindle hole of side 1. The side 2 label and centre also have an inner groove consistent with it being a second label variation. The label credits (see pictures) confirm this to be a relatively rare “Northern Songs” pressing; one which corrected the original UK label error attributing the publishing rights of 4 original McCartney and Lennon numbers (I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Do You Want to Know A Secret, There’s a Place) to “Dick James Mus. Co.” instead of the newly formed “Northern Songs Ltd.”. This error was corrected through April/May 1963, shortly before the change to Parlophone’s yellow black label, hence the rarity of this version.
