When the Beatles' latest album 'Yesterday And Today' was cobbled together by Capitol as a sort of stop-gap catch-up album with the British releases, who would have guessed it would wind up as their most notorious release?
The original cover photo was taken on March 25, 1966 and had the lads dressed in butcher's coats, with bits of raw meat and dismembered dolls strewn about them. The Salvador Dali like photo was a lightning rod of an image that immediately drew fire from critics, retailers and even before it hit stores on June 15th they decided to withdraw it and sent a note out to everyone who had one ready to sell to return them, so they could repackage / replace. Capitol Records, who never had much of a spine when it came to controversy anyway, designed a new jacket, this one with the buys in a travel trunk. Fitting in between the releases ‘Rubber Soul’ and ‘Revolver’ the jacket was looked slapdash at best.
When the records returned to various Capitol distribution plants, and had the record removed from the jackets. Some Brainiac came up with the notion that Capitol would save 10¢ a jacket if a new slick was pasted over the old instead of using a whole new jacket. Considering the size of the first pressing, that could save Capitol some serious money. Many of the plants simply destroyed the jackets and waited for replacements, but others followed through with the paste-over, especially in Scranton and Los Angeles.
THIS JACKET has been covered over by Capitol and astonishingly enough, has never had anyone curios enough to actually try to remove the paste-over cover. As expected, you can see that tell tale dark of Ringo’s shirt under the lab coat there under ‘Today’ on the right hand side. And the jacket is a little short on the open end because of being factory trimmed when they pasted over.

INCLUDES: Original orange Capitol ’66 inner sleeve which has no bent corners, writing, stains or tears, but does have a 1” split at the center of the bottom. It also comes along with a REPRODUCTION of the Capitol letter to Reviewers, Distributors and Retailers about the withdrawn cover and how to return them.
CONDITION: The JACKET on this STEREO pressing is as shown, with a small tear to the surface in the upper left corner which does not get down to the original jacket. All seams are solid and it has a complete spine with NO bent corners, stickers, or tape. The back has only a little ink mark in the lower right and some yellowing around the edges. It has the small ‘5’ in the lower right
The STEREO RECORD (Los Angeles) play grades at VG and covered with a flurry of light marks yes still plays quite well and will only have a little tick heard occasionally.
