Description
This special edition of Help! was produced for Shell to kick off their "Shell helps" campaign in 1979. As part of this promotion, Shell arranged that a small number of these special versions of Help from The Beatles was produced to be given as a gift to their Dutch distributors and store managers. Less than 2000 copies were printed - so unless you were a Shell distributor or store manager in 1979 you could not get it anywhere! All covers for this album were produced in the Netherlands, but some copies of the vinyl were pressed in Sweden. There are different views / ideas on the Swedish edition: Some say there are about 1,000 copies in each country were printed, some say that a minority of copies in Sweden was printed. We have already had several copies in our hands and examined the for our research. Here the division between Swedish and Dutch vinyl was proportionate. Never before and never after one of the official albums has been subject to such artwork revision for a commercial promotion by another company. It is unclear how and whether Shell has succeeded in getting permission of The Beatles!
FAKE or REAL!!??
These days, (as is the case with quite a number of these rare international Beatles album releases) you can get bootleg/counterfeit pressings. Some on coloured vinyl, some on picture discs. Buyers beware: all the originals were on black vinyl only, all others are fakes. And what's more: there are fakes on black vinyl circulating as well. I can tell you how to distinguish between a fake and an official pressing: Fakes all have a thinner cardboard cover and the vinyls have scratched matrix numbers. BUT: THIS ONE IS REAL!! This copy has stamped matrix numbers: YEX 168 39455-1-Y/ YEX 169 39456-1-Y, is ofcourse in black vinyl and has the original thick, full colour cartboard. Of course, as I am living in Holland and own a lot of dutch pressings, I know what's original or not. The cover of these 'reissues' (read: counterfeits) is mostly stunning white because it's new. This cover is obviously well taken care of, but not new. Slightly discolored as is common on records aged 37 years old.
