Summary:
The most OBSCURE Original UK Lennon Album, ‘UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1 TWO VIRGINS’ was John’s FIRST UK SOLO Album release in 1968. Not surprisingly, it caused much of a stir at the time due to the nude content of the album cover and the experimental nature of the music content. A major obstacle was the record company, who refused to release it unless the pictures were changed. Eventually the album was distributed by Track Records in the UK - with one condition - that it was wrapped in a brown paper bag, to cover the offending nude scenes, but even with approval, the record company printers would not print it. In addition many record shops refused to stock it, and it therefore only sold around 5,000 copies, not even entering the charts. Even the music press opposed it and no editor would accept any of the adverts. It was the first Solo Beatles album to be DELETED by EMI.
The naked photographs were taken in early October 1968 in the basement of Ringo's property in Montague Square, where John set up a camera up using a delayed shutter release, taking the photos himself.
Album Description:
Released by APPLE UK on 29 November 1968, the Original FIRST PRESSING UK STEREO Vinyl LP is on the Dark Green Apple Label, with the ‘Track Records’ logo, with ‘Sold in UK….’ and ‘Mfd in UK’ printed to both record labels.
Matrix and Stamper information:
Side 1 matrix: SAPCOR 2A-1 and Side 2: SAPCOR 2B-1
Side 1 stampers: 1/G and Side 2: 1/O.
The Vinyl LP comes in its ORIGINAL Black Die Cut Inner Bag
…And is housed in the MOST AMAZING ALMOST MINT, WHITE, CLEAN, FIRM Original, FULLY Laminated Sleeve, featuring John and Yoko baring all on both sides. The reverse of the Stereo sleeve is printed 'Apple Records May 1968’, ‘Made in Merrie England’ and ‘Photographs by John Lennon’. Additionally, there is a statement from Paul McCartney and the title of the album (see relevant scan).
Audio Quality:
In my estimatation the NEW LOOKING album has only received this ONE play by me – Both sides play EXTREMELY WELL without any skips, clicks or distortion.
Album Condition:
The STUNNING, SNOW WHITE, Fully Laminated sleeve is BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED, and in STRONG near mint condition. As you will see from the detailed scans provided, both sides of the sleeve are noticeably FIRM and VERY FLAT. The opening edge is SHARP, TIGHT and UNDAMAGED, as is the Spine Edge. There is only a ‘hint’ of record impression to the front panel of the sleeve - visible only when tilting the sleeve around in the light. ALL the edges are FLAT and UNDAMAGED. The reverse panel of the sleeve is in the same SNOW WHITE, BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED condition as the front panel. All there is to mention is a small crease to the top left hand corner of the sleeve – nothing serious. A commom fault of these sleeves is laminate lifting, where air traps underneath the laminate during the manufacturing process. This example has NO major laminate lifting, just a tiny area to the front and back towards the spine edge. This is an EXCEPTIONAL sleeve and we doubt very much whether another one will come on to the open market to match the ULTIMATE condition of this one – it’s truly SENSATIONAL!
Both sides of the record labels are in PRISTINE mint condition – THEY BOTH LOOK NEW, and there are NO spider trails visible to the totally UNWORN labels.
Both sides of the Vinyl Playing surfaces are in BRAND NEW LOOKING, DAY OF RELEASE, mint condition – looks like it has just left the Pressing Plant.
The Original Black inner bag is excellent. NO splitting or tearing around the die cut hole, and NO seam splits to any of the edges, and just a little inevitable creasing – A NICE example.
In all our 13 years of trading as a Beatles Specialist we have NEVER seen or offered this DESIRABLE Lennon album in such REMARKABLE condition. TOP QUALITY FUTURE INVESTMENT potential. Would NEVER REQUIRE UPGRADING and PROBABLY THE FINEST THAT YOU WILL SEE ON THE OPEN MARKET.
