In this auction:

• “JOLLY WHAT! THE BEATLES & FRANK IFIELD ON STAGE” by The Beatles & Frank Ifield

• This LP is Vee Jay Records VJLP 1085.

• It is a MONO (monaural) PRESSING.

• This LP was released in February of 1964.

• This version has the ALL BLACK LABEL WITH “VJ” above “VEE-JAY RECORDS” BOTH IN SILVER PRINT.

• The LP (cover and vinyl) in this auction is the REAL THING. It is NOT a counterfeit. We know this because:

  • The cover has excellent print quality without blurred letters or images.

  • The cover has the printing on the spine: “JOLLY WHAT! THE BEATLES & FRANK IFIELD VJLP1085”.

  • The vinyl has the Monarch Records logo (MR in a circle) scratched out in the trail off on both sides.

• As you probably know, Vee Jay Records, for a short period of time in 1963-1964, held the rights in the U.S. to a handful of Beatles songs that the record company recycled several times by selling the same songs in different covers with different LP titles. The buying public quickly realized that they were not acquiring any new Beatles’ material in each Vee Jay album they purchased. Instead, they were basically buying the same Beatles’ tunes when they purchased “Introducing the Beatles”, “Songs, Pictures & Stories of the Fabulous Beatles”, “The Beatles vs The Four Seasons” (Beatles disk), and the LP in this auction.

• However, with the issue of this LP, Vee Jay Records carried their misrepresentation (perhaps even “deception”) of their Beatles’ material to a new level by stating on the cover “ON STAGE” which naturally implied to the average Beatles LP-buyer that this LP contained LIVE recordings from Beatles and Frank Ifield concerts… which it didn’t!!!

• This LP contains the following Beatles’ tunes: “Please Please Me”, “From Me To You”, “Ask Me Why”, and “Thank You Girl”.

• The rear cover states that The Beatles and Frank Ifield were combined on this LP as they “are the most popular recording stars in Europe” (of course, at that time).

• The COVER is in BEAUTIFUL NEAR MINT MINUS CONDITION. Only some light “age spotting” on the white rear cover near the opening keeps me from grading the cove Near Mint. The corners are nice and sharp with only a tiny touch of wear on two of them. The seams and spine are solid with NO signs of wear at all. There is virtually NO WEAR on this cover! In fact, It’s the nicest cover that I’ve ever seen of this “Jolly What!” LP, and you know how this dark purple cover is prone to easily develop and show even the slightest bit of wear.

• The VINYL is in STRONG VG to WEAK VG+ CONDITION with small and very light surface hairlines/scuffs (none “feel-able”). The vinyl has LOTS OF GLOSS!

• It seems that vinyl with the oval and brackets VJ logo labels are most commonly found in this LP. The all-black label with silver print, like the LP in this auction, is found less often. So this seems to be one of the less-common Vee Jay vinyl issues of this LP title.
