"I'll Cry Instead" is a song of anger set to a country & western tune. Recorded in 1964, it has a musical arrangement the Beatles would reuse for their cover of "Act Naturally" in 1965, a fast shuffle that bounces along. But here the music is in the service of a far darker lyric, as the singer recounts his bitter disaffection due to a romantic disappointment. He says he is mad and depressed, that he wishes he could revenge himself on his former lover, that he is going go away, but that when he comes back he's going to take it out on other girls. It was one of a series of songs that John Lennon sang with the Beatles in 1964 that expressed such feelings, notably "You Can't Do That," "No Reply," and "I'm a Loser," and, to a lesser extent, "If I Fell" and "I'll Be Back." Lennon would continue to mine this subject matter in 1965 with songs like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" and "Run for Your Life." Of course, romantic despair isn't exactly a rare subject in pop music, but the tone of some of these songs is surprisingly direct, and the degree of anger is unusual. "I'll Cry Instead" is perhaps the most direct of them, though at the time of its release, it was perceived as just another catchy song from the prolific Beatles. It was recorded for the A Hard Day's Night soundtrack album, though it was not performed in the film. Director Richard Lester rejected it, probably because the lyric content was so negative. In the U.S., it also appeared on the Something New album and was released as a single only a week after "A Hard Day's Night" and simultaneously with "And I Love Her," Capitol Records apparently testing the marketplace to see just how many Beatles singles could succeed at the same time. The answer was all of them, but to a greater or lesser extent: "A Hard Day's Night" topped the charts; "And I Love Her" made the Top 20; and "I'll Cry Instead" made the Top 40. (It's notable that two different edits of the song were released. The version on the British A Hard Day's Night and on Something New ran under two minutes, but the one on the U.S. version of A Hard Day's Night and on the single had the first verse repeated at the end, for a running time over two minutes. Both edits were based on the same recording.) "I'll Cry Instead" has attracted relatively few covers for a Beatles song, and it's not surprising that some of the more prominent ones were instrumentals. For example, Chet Atkins recognized his own influence in the music and recorded it for his 1966 album Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles. ( Billy Joel did a particularly effective version as the non-LP B-side of his single "An Innocent Man" in 1983.)
