Description

THE BEATLES - 'HEY JUDE!'

1969 UK 1st *EXPORT* PRESSING

**ULTRA-RARE '1-EMI-BOX' LABEL**

Recently, some Beatles expor' LPs have come onto the market puporting to be UK 'Decca' pressings. However, their 'grooved' labels most likely signify that they were actually manufactured overseas under license, using metalwork, labels and covers supplied from the UK.

This copy of 'Hey Jude' is a case-in-point. The sticker on the rear of the cover tells us that is was 'Manufactured under 'CARIFTA' regulations'. 'CARIFTA' is The Caribbean Free Trade Association which was founded by Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago on 15 December 1965. These countries were joined on 1 July, 1968 by Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, Saint Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines; and on 1 August, 1968 by Montserrat and Jamaica.

The cover sticker, appearance and weight of the vinyl suggests that this copy was manufactured in one of the above countries using materials supplied to it by EMI in the UK.

However, make no mistake, this is still an extremely rare record.

Both labels are true UK 'One EMI Box' export labels: P-CPCS 106
With the 'Made in Gt. Britain' text & 'Gramophone Co Ltd...' rims

House in a fully laminated 'Garrod & Lofthouse' UK made & printed cover .
The original 'CARIFTA' sticker is still adhered to the rear panel.

Labels: EXCELLENT PLUS

The side two label is set slightly off-centre but does not intrude onto the playing surface.

Visual: EXCELLENT

Both sides are clean, bright and glossy with no significant or major marks visible when viewed in strong daylight.
Close & careful inspection directly under a halogen desk lamp reveals only some wispy inner-sleeve removal paper hairlines, but absolutely no other marks or any scratches.

Audio: EXCELLENT PLUS

The sound quality is extremely high and comparable with UK pressed copies.
This copy has received just a few careful plays on good quality equipment and both sides play without any groovewear distortion or background noise.
In fact, apart form a single 'pop' at the beginning of the 2nd verse of 'Hey Jude', I detected no other audible faults or wear.
Both run-ins and all bands extremely quietly and without any significant or major intereference.

Cover: EXCELLENT

This example retains its high gloss laminate with just 4 small 'thumbnail' creases towards the opening edge but no other significant signs of wear.
There is some minor rubbing to the left corners but both opening edges are relatively unworn with no tears or feathering.
The rear panel has some minor storagewear to the exposed edge, but again retains a clean, shiny & unamaged laminate.
Both upper and lower seams are unworded and these and the spine are strong, unstressed and unsplit.
