The Roland Rennie Collection

Coming up for the foreseeable future, is a record collection that is quite unique. It is the personal collection of the late great Mr. Roland Rennie who was the managing director at Polydor records in the UK during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. There are some unique records, including 7 inch singles and LP's, along with Acetates, Demo's/Promo's and Factory sample records. Most are very early issues, if not the first to be produced. All of the main Polydor artists are present, including international and UK labels connected to Polydor.

In 1950, a young man named Roland Rennie joined EMI records in Hayes, Middlesex, UK. Roland quickly grew with the company and saw its success mushroom manyfold during the late 1950's and early 1960's.

During his 12 years at EMI, he held many positions and eventually became the right hand man to EMI managing director, L.G. Wood in 1959, and was closely involved with major affiliation switches by major American firms. He oversaw the changes from British Decca to EMI and of Liberty and United records. His experience would put him in the top 6 of most knowledgeable executives in the industry at that time.

In 1962, Roland was a member of the team reponsible for the conception of the 'Stateside' label, which became the outlet in the UK and many other countries for: Scepter, Vee Jay, Diamond, Swan, Laurie; and a dozen other U.S. ensigns.

In addition, under instruction from Sir George Martin, Roland was also the person responsible for The Beatles' entrance onto the American stage, and was directly involved in negotations for them to appear on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time.

In 1965, he left EMI to take up the position of managing director at Polydor records in the UK, and directly oversaw the signings to the label of: The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Bee Gees, Sonny & Cher, Wilson Pickett, Ben E King, Otis Redding, The Drifters, Joe Tex, Patti and her Belles, Don Covay, Barbara Lewis and Soloman Burke, to name but a few.

On offer today, The Beatles 1967 UK stereo repress 12" Vinyl Lp titled "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" on the black and silver two EMI boxed Parlophone label with a Factory Sample - Not For Sale sticker on side 1.

Matrix side 1: XEX 637-1 (16 H)
Matrix side 2: XEX 638-2 (3 7H)

Side 1 condition:

Side 1 plays through beautifully with no jumps or sticks. There is only light background noise here and there, especially through quieter sections, but the quality of the vinyl still remains generally free of background noise. 8.5/10

The surface and shine of the vinyl is excellent but with very few light marks or hairlines on the surface and the it is clean without grease or dirt.

The black and sliver Parlophone label with a sticker is in very good plus condition with light wear but a bit of surface discolouration.
Generally, the label is pleasing to the eye and the printed text boldly stands out with no fading present.

Side 2 condition:

Side 2 plays through beautifully with very light background noise in quieter places but it is minimal overall. There certainly aren't any sticks or jumps on either side.

The excellent shine of the surface of the vinyl on side 2 is equal to that as described on side 1. There are very few light marks or light lines and it is beautifully clean of grease or dirt.

The Parlophone label on side 2  is in very good plus condition. Again, there is a little discolouration and light wear around the centre hole but the text remains visually bold with no obvious fading.

The EMI inner sleeve is in excellent condition with very little fading, no tears, no seam splits, slight creasing but very little discolouration.

The Garrod and Lofthouse Ltd. gatefold outer sleeve is in excellent condition with no splits, tears or major wear. It has a lovely square shape and the spine reads perfectly with very little change to its shape either. Inside it opens with a 'creak' like it had never been opened. It is clean without damage or discolouration.
