Description

Bascom Lamar Lunsford

  78 rpm, old time country

BASCOM LAMAR LUNSFORD, Brunswick 219, 78rpm, “I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground” b/w “Mountain Dew.”  Condition; VG+ to VG++.

Included in Harry Smith’s Anthology Of American Folk Music, “Mole In The Ground” is one of the more surrealistic old-time country folk songs you’re likely to come across.  Bob Dylan must of thought so when he pinched Lunsford’s line:

“I don’t like a railroad man,

cause the railroad man they’ll kill you they can

and drink up your blood like wine”

for his own image in “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again” when he sang:

“Mona tried to tell me to stay away from the train line.

She said that all the railroad men just drink up your blood like wine.”

CONDITION:

The record is visually graded as VG+, some might grade it as VG++.  The music plays very well, with minor wear and with little of the usual hiss, crackle, and pop – nothing that impairs play.  The music plays well above the background noise.  The labels show light wear, with a small amount of spindle wear on the A side.  (Standard Docks/JJJ grading used).  Aural grade will, of course, vary depending upon the equipment it is played on.  There’s a fair amount of gloss left on this one.

Please be advised that the label scan -- while showing an approximately accurate picture, tends to show a somewhat degraded image of printed words, occasionally shifts colors and picks up glare, and usually gives an image which is at least a half grade or more below the actual quality.  Still, the scan will give an over-all sense of the label’s condition.
