Description
This is a rare piece of Badfinger memorabilia, featuring autographs from all four members of the band. Given the tragic history of the band it's much harder to find something signed by all four of the original members; Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Joey Molland & Mike Gibbins.
This is an Apple Records promo photo, measuring 20cm x 26cm
This came to me via a collection of items from the Blue Lagoon Ballroom, Newquay. The collection originated from somebody who worked the summer season of 1970 at the Blue Lagoon. At the venue were posters for upcoming acts, usually for the following week. Lots of these contained promo photo's that were sent out by agents glued to paper with fairly crude text stating when the band was appearing.
These posters would usually then be ripped down and thrown away ready for the next guest appearance at the venue. Thankfully the guy who these came from decided to take down and keep quite a few of these. Sadly, the person these came from has since passed on so I'm unsure if he got the bands to sign them, or if they were signed by the bands while the posters were stuck to the wall.
You can see the collection of posters this came in on the Blue Lagoon page of my website (bottom of the page) - www.kernowbeat.co.uk/bluelagoon.html
This Badfinger signed promo photo was included with the posters. The Iveys played a few times at the Blue Lagoon and Badfinger played a stint in August 1969, but given that the guy was working at the venue in 1970 I would date this as being from 2nd July 1970, when Badfinger played the Blue Lagoon as part of a run around the South West of England (Bude the day before, Barnstable the day after).
The item isn't in the best shape as you can see from the photographs. However it would seem that some of the damage was already existing. Presumably the picture was folder over and there was some damp (probably beer or something similar!) that stuck it together and it was then opened for the autographs to be obtained, causing the damage you can see top and bottom. Tom’s autograph is written over the top part of the damage so it must have happened at the time. These pictures and posters were all stuck to the walls of a busy, smoke filled, club so none are in perfect shape.
This picture has been removed from a paper backing, which you can see on the image of the back of the card. There is some dirt on the picture itself, partly due to its original location in the club, and the fact that it’s been sitting in an attic for the last 50 years. It might clean up, but that’s not something I’m going to attempt, that’s a job for somebody who knows what they are doing if the winning bidder should choose to do so.
So while not in the best of condition, this is an extremely rare item
