Private pressing of Back Door's first album. I remember reading that the landlord of their local had financed the recording of this album. The pub, their HQ up in Yorkshire, was the Red Lion on Blakey Ridge. Hence the “Blakey” Record label. I think they had RCA print about 1000 copies. The sleeve is in very good condition*. It's a fraction short of excellent as there is some “foxing” on the rear and an inch long piece of wear on the top edge. It hasn't gone through but I thought I'd mention it. A separate photograph of the back sleeve is included.

The inner sleeve has “Backdoor” written in ink and has discoloured over the past 40 years. It's white near the centre but sepia at the edges.

The record itself is in excellent condition*. There are a few light marks which make negligible impact on listening quality.

I've listened to it right through. Great stuff! Years back I travelled up to the Brecon Jazz Festival to see Back Door. It was pretty sad to see a frail Ron Aspery sat in a St John's Ambulance vehicle and no surprise that the gig had to be cancelled.

There was some consolation in returning to Brecon a couple of years later to catch Back Door with the “Room Darkening” Rod Mason on sax. Tony Hick's 'phone rang between numbers “I can't talk now Dear, I'm at a gig”.

R.I.P. both Ron Aspery and Tony Hicks.

You should check out the quality on the attached eCommerce Player. (In fact my request/demand is that you listen before placing any bid.) You would know it was vinyl but I guess that's what you are seeking.

(This album recorded on my Linn Sondek turntable using “Audacity”, exported as a 320 kbps MP3 file and uploaded into eCommerce Player. No editing whatsoever just pressing pause when I turned the disc over.)

Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
