Description
This massive 1962 5LP stereo box set from Angel Records (3599 E/L) presents J. S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (St. Matthew Passion).
Featured vocalists include Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Peter Pears, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Christa Ludwig, Nicolaï Gedda, Walter Berry, John Carol Case, Otakar Kraus, Janet Baker, Geraint Evans, Helen Watts, and Wilfred Brown.
Featured instrumental soloists include Gareth Morris (flute), Arthur Ackroyd (flute), Sidney Sutcliffe (oboi d'amore), Peter Newbury (oboi da caccia), Hugh Bean (violin), Bela Dekany (violin), and Desmond Dupré (viola da gamba).
Continuo players include George Malcolm (harpsichord), Viola Tunnard (harpsichord), Raymond Clark (cello), and James W. Merrett (contrabass). Also featured is Ralph Downes (organ).
All are accompanied by the Philharmonia Choir (chorus master: Wilhelm Pitz), the Boys of the Hampstead Parish Church Choir (choirmaster: Martindale Sidwell), and the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Otto Klemperer.
A large (album-sized) full-color booklet includes a several-page introduction by William Mann, plus full lyrics of the performance in German and English.
Overall condition is excellent; however, the box and its contents have been hole-punched in the upper-right corner. There is also a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back (Photo 2). Discs are auto-coupled (disc 1 has Sides 1 & 10, disc 2 has Sides 2 and 9, etc.).
This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear.
