The St Matthew Passion (German: Matthäus-Passion) is a Passion, a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, with libretto by Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici, a German poet and librettist for many of the canatas which Bach composed in Leipzig).  It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew (in the Luther Bible) to music, with interspersed chorales and arias.  It is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of classical sacred music.

Review: Klemperer's performance (1962) still stands out as one of the finest ever recorded.  Klemperer’s St. Matthew Passion is, by far, the most preferred version (among Herreweghe, Harnoncourt and Gardiner).  His very slow tempo allows one to listen to everyone of the instruments from the orchestra and voices from the chorus.

Recorded in the UK from November 21 1960 through November 28 1961.  Mfg. in USA.
