About Patrick Bismuth (from the Zig Zag Territoires website):
Patrick Bismuth is an outstanding violinist, a professor at the Conservatoire National in Paris and the Conservatoire Régional in Boulogne, who has attracted great attention with his recordings of Bach’s sonatas and partitas on the Stil label, his CD ‘Vocalité Instrumentale’ (winner of the Cini Prize in 1997), and his recent Enesco release on Zig-Zag Territoires (‘Recommandé de Répertoire’).
On all sides the originality of his personality has been singled out for mention:
Cini Foundation, 1997: The Prize is awarded for the subtle pursuit of dramatic expression by the intelligent, inventive and boldly virtuosic violinist Patrick Bismuth, in perfect harmony with the members of the ensemble La Tempesta, who provide a highly imaginative realisation of the basso continuo.
Répertoire, 2001: Everything this double album has to offer appears exceptional, set in a fresh perspective, with an indefinable aura of things never heard before. . . . The musicians reveal to us fragrances of unprecedented musical sensibility. From first bar to last of this Enesco recording, the listener’s attention is unfailingly held. An impalpable magic takes effect. Laurent Barthel. The audacity of Biber’s Rosary Sonatas offers Patrick Bismuth the chance to show to the full his talent for making music entirely his own, presenting it ‘as if he were recreating it, improvising for us’ – with a sensation of art music mingling with memories of Bohemian fiddling . . .
A large and prestigious continuo group (cello, lirone, violone, theorbo, harp, harpsichords and organ) underlines the fervour, the splendour, the beauty of this faith revitalised by the Counter-Reformation.
