The Paul Butterfield Blues Band's debut set the tone for the electric blues rock of that decade. At a time when Motown and the Beatles ruled the pop charts, here came an interracial band from roughly the same generation who were ignoring those sounds in favor of playing authentic, rough-edged, moaning blues. That the group got any notice at all is a testament to their prowess as musicians. That they pointed a way to the future by delving into the music of the past, attests to their importance as trailblazers. Even though the band itself remained faithful sound of their Chicago blues heroes like Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters, one can hear the beginnings of the late 60s and early 70s jam band scene, particular in the virtuoso (but still bluesy) soloing of guitarists Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, but also in the general feeling that what the group was playing came from purely from the gut. Butterfield's harp playing is as fiery as anything this side of Little Walter, and the rhythm section is both funky and flawless.

Plain and simple, there just is not a weak track on the album. The album opener, "Born in Chicago" is one of the best-written blues songs of the era and deserves its current status as a standard of the genre. Then there are the convincing, heartfelt covers of artists like Elmore James, Little Walter, and Muddy Waters (Sam Lay sounded exact - I mean, EXACTLY - replication of Muddy on "Got My Mojo Working"), which added a youthful energy to the old classics and helped make the blues relevant for a whole new generation of musicians, changing the direction of popular music for decades to come.

"Elektra moved into electric blues when Paul Rothchild signed the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1965. Rothchild ended up recording their first album three times before he felt he got it right. The album cost $50,000, which was a staggering sum for the time, but the album was brilliant and sold more copies than any other Elektra album up to that time. As Paul Rothchild has since said, "It made the electric blues a viable form for popular music". When Bob Dylan wanted to perform at Newport with an electric band to back him up, he got the Butterfield Blues Band" (from the article by David Edwards, Mike Callahan and Patrice Eyries).

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)            The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(a)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(b)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in thin blue marker, about 1/4 x 4 inches in size)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3   (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top seam

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the opening side (nothing significant)
