This is the original 1994 release of Det Som Engang Var which was the second full length Burzum album. Some people seem a little confused and suggest this is in fact the 'first' album since some of the material was written before the Burzum debut EP. In fact this is not the case, and the majority of the songs were written later. Of course, all the Burzum albums use material written by Varg over various time periods and were not recorded in strictly chronological order.
The music is basically an extension to the previous albums, though the overall effect is more abstract. A couple of great 'metal' tracks form the nucleus of the album, which also carried a number of dark atmospheric pieces (hence setting a trend in its own right). The track 'Hans som reiste' is an early version of the theme that was to develop into the famous 'Tomhet' synth piece on the next album. The album also sees Varg experimenting with haunting clean backing vocals; the overall effect makes a more accessible, but no less intense, sequel to his first masterpiece. This release came with the limited edition poster which is still as is the record itself in mint condition.
