BURGERS FROM HEAVEN
SURFIN’ SHARK

Here is a most remarkable record. It's by Darryl Rhoades who, in 1975, formed the now legendary Hahavishnu Orchestra, a twelve piece musical comedy troupe that traveled nationally until June of 1978.

During their 3 1/2 years of touring, Rhoades and band received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Playboy, Village Voice and too many other magazines to list. Their show and material was constantly and favorably compared to Zappa, The Fugs, The Tubes and others. Rhoades knew good things were ahead when Phoebe Snow stated that it was one of the most disgusting shows she'd ever witnessed while he had spit hamburger buns on simply irresistible Robert Palmer. When word of the incident spread many more artists were drawn such as members of Kiss, Martin Mull, and Iggy Pop who sat in with the group.

In the spring of '76, he released the incredible record 'Burgers From Heaven" and 'Surfin' Shark." The record got great reviews. Oui Magazine said that 'Darryl Rhoades is sort of a musical, contemporary Lenny Bruce.. his lyrics are timely and very funny."

The top side if a do-wop tunes describing how hamburgers, fries and shakes just keep reminding Darryl of a romance gone awry.

Burgers from heaven
Sent from up above
Burgers from heaven
Those burgers meant love
Without you in my world I have no place
In every burger that I eat I see your face
I can't believe you've left me
I'm still in a daze
It's not the same
I hear your name
Ooze out of the mayonnaise....

The flipside is a surf tune mixed with a little bit of Jaws, where the surfin shark is the star. It's a bit of Jan & Dean, a bit of the Beach Boys with the just-right surf guitar and OOooOOOOooWWeeee OOOoo backing vocals.

I was surfing at the beach the other night
When I saw those fins coming at me from the right
I couldn't' tell what it was 'cause it was growing dark
But I found it was...
Surfin' shark!
Watch it swim
Surfin shark!
It's coming after him
Surfin' shark!
It bit off one of his limbs
You won't walk back from surfin' shark!

During the existence of the band several songs were recorded but only this one record was released...."BURGERS FROM HEAVEN/SURFIN' SHARK", a very rare 45 RPM. In1988, the song "BURGERS FROM HEAVEN" was used in the Jim Varney movie release "FASTFOOD" so you know it must be a classic.
