BUMPERS: 1970 UK ISLAND 2LP PROG SAMPLER KING CRIMSON, NICK DRAKE

SUPERB SET w/ ISLAND APOLOGY SLIP - GREAT SOUND EX+

BUMPERS

UK ISLAND (IDP 1) FIRST PRESSING (June 1970) OF ISLAND'S MAGNIFICENT DOUBLE LP SAMPLER "Bumpers"
ONE OF THE BEST (if not THE best) SAMPLER OF THE PERIOD - WITH AN IMPRESSIVE LINE-UP HIGHLIGHTING THE ASTONISHING DIVERSITY OF TALENT ON THE ISLAND LABEL

PRESSED ON MID/HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST ISSUE PINK ISLAND LABELS
MATRICES: IDP 1 + A / IDP 1 + B and IDP + 1 + C / IDP + 1 + D2
THE TWO RECORDS ARE HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford" WITH THE ORIGINAL 29'11 PRICE STICKER STILL IN PLACE
AND THE TWO ORIGINAL POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES - ONE DATED MAY 1970 AND THE OTHER DATED JUNE 1970
THIS COPY ALSO COMES WITH AN ISLAND RECORDS APOLOGY SLIP;
"Island records would like to apologise for the imperfect sound reproduction of the King Crimson Track "Cadence & Cascade" on this copy of "Bumpers." The tape hiss is due to a technical fault in mastering and will not in any way damage your stereo equipment"

Tremendous compilation which contains several genuine rarities, as both Mott The Hoople and Fairport Convention are represented by otherwise unavailable versions of their contributions ("Thunderbuck Ram" and "Walk Awhile" respectively). And, when "Bumpers" was released, Nick Drake's second LP, "Bryter Layter" was yet to be issued, so this album contains the first availability of the deeply beautiful, "Hazey Jane"
A bountiful double album package rounding up the cream of the UK Island label's 1970 output, highlighting recent releases and anticipating forthcoming ones.
Of all the labels operating in the UK as the decade turned, Island was unquestionably the most adventurous, at the same time as maintaining a stable whose internal logic now seems impeccable.
Leaning towards the folkier side of hard rock, and the bluesier edge of prog - an adventure that allowed King Crimson and Mott The Hoople to rub shoulders with Cat Stevens and Traffic - Island rounded up the cream of the British underground, and these periodic compilations showcased it at its best.
Tracks from the Keith Relf/Jim McCarty-era Renaissance, Clouds and Quintessence remind us of a day when even the greatest modern collectibles were just regular new releases.
Today Island ranks among the most collectible British label of the entire era and every track on Bumpers offers a reason why

SIDE 1:
?"Every Mother's Son" (Traffic)
?"Love" (Bronco)
?"I Am The Walrus" (Spooky Tooth)
?"Jesus, Buddha, Moses, Gauranga" (Quintessence)
?SIDE 2:

?"Nothing To Say" (Jethro Tull)

LABELS: EXCELLENT+
Clean, bright unmarked labels with light to moderate spindle traces
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+
Both records retain their original deep glossy sheen. Side Four has some surface rash from the poly-lining of the inner sleeve on Track One and on the run-off (from years of storage) but this has no audio impact
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT+
Sensational audio reproduction (varying from track to track depending upon the source i.e. the Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig tracks have a fairly quiet cut) - but strong, sharp and clear with a freshness and immediacy that is an absolute joy to hear - the whole set plays beautifully throughout. My play-check at loud volume revealed no major audio issues of note - no scratches, no loud clicks or pops and no groove-wear or distortion. I detected a minor light touch of surface (between some of the tracks) but no other audible distractions of any kind - very nice copy indeed - finest I have seen in a while
NOTE: 'Cadence & Cascade' has no "hiss" apologised for by Island (maybe they mean the engineering produces some high level distortion - just the way the version is recorded) - it's just engineered with very high treble which renders the high-hat, cymbals and higher registers very prominent in the mix
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT+
The original gatefold cover is clean and bright with no loss to the strong vibrant yellow colour and little edge or spine wear - all text on the thick spine is clear and bold - just light knocks to the bottom corners

ALL RECORDS ARE PACKAGED WITH THE VINYL OUTSIDE OF THE SLEEVE TO PREVENT ANY 'KNIFING' DURING TRANSIT
A PROTECTIVE POLY SLEEVE, NEW INNER SLEEVE WITH ANTI-STATIC LINER, QUALITY BOX (NOT ENVELOPE) MAILER AND AMPLE STIFFENERS ARE ALWAYS USED TO ENSURE THAT YOUR RECORD ARRIVES SAFELY
