The Budos Band's self-titled debut in 2005 was and remains an exhilarating dive into Afro-tinged instrumental soul. Drums, bass, guitar and electric organ form a tight backbone, while dual trumpets, baritone sax and a percussive arsenal of bongos, congas, guiro and cowbell propel the grooves forward. Now reissued to mark the 20th anniversary, tracks still move seamlessly between funk, soul and psychedelic rock while conjuring a raw, 70s New York energy. The arrangements are tight yet loose enough to let each musician breathe and create a hypnotic push-and-pull across the record. Full of swagger, punch and rhythmical precision.
