BUDGIE – Squawk ORIG MCA LP /MKPS 2023 (UK, Stereo, 1972)

Happy to present the 2nd Budgie LP – a great album which has taken years for many to fully appreciate, here in its original UK 1st press but with the added curiosity of MISPRESSED blue/black MCA labels.  Both sides are pressed with the Side 1 label, though the vinyl plays both sides.  I have never come across another copy like this – could well be a one-off!

The single unlaminated sleeve designed by Roger Dean shows no reference to the manufacture and is presented in a TRUE VG (Very Good) condition.  When I say VG, I don’t mean creased to the high heavens with dirt, splits, softening and looking tired – like many VG sleeves you find on ebay, I mean all in one piece with only a few SMALL light creases, fully intact spine with ALL text legible, hardly any feathering to the opening edges, NO splits (although the top edge looks to have been glued back at some stage) and NO writing, stickers or residue. These are the imperfections away from Mint:- noticeable ringwear to the top front and the majority of the rear (not too heavy), a little bleaching to the top front, 2 or 3 faint handling creases to the front, some small edge creases, some rubbing to the top edge and a little 1cm patch of paper loss to the rear opening edge.  Other than these it’s quite pleasing and there is no fading of the front panel colour.

The original blue/black labels (MISPRESSED) are in fabulous condition showing maybe 2or 3 spindle trails to each side (not very visible) and NO damage, writing or residue.  Colours are still very strong too.

The medium to heavy weight vinyl is in VERY pleasing shape.  As a collector, I’m sick of dealers who put the visual condition of a disc as EX+ or close to mint when there are plenty scuffs and other marks.  AN EXCELLENT RECORD SHOULD ONLY HAVE ONE OR TWO LIGHT AND ISOLATED MARKS, WHILE EX+ SHOULD BE VIRTUALLY SPOTLESS.  Check the dictionary definition of excellent to see that it means ‘EXTREMELY’ good, in record terms that does NOT mean ‘covered in marks and slightly worn’!!!!

This disc is a true EX+ (Excellent Plus), if you look VERY closely you may pick up some very fine light scuffing, but most wouldn’t and most would not hesitate to describe this as being in a Mint state.  It looks lovely with virtually maximum full shine and other than the fine ‘bagrash’ shows NO appreciable marking at all.  NO scratches, hairlines or embedded dirt.  IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and to the band’s and producer Roger Bain’s credit, sounds absolutely wonderful.  In fact, it sounds so good, that while listening to it I was seriously tempted to withdraw it from sale and keep it for myself.  I guarantee you will hear NO ticks, clicks, pops.   NO hiss, dirt or dust static and NO distortion or loss of clarity.  Genuine A+ analogue reproduction – just brilliant and worthy of a close to new playback status.  You just don’t get this sound from digital!!!

Supplied in its original poly-lined 8/72 inner, this is a great record.  Why should we care about Budgie?  Because they were there very early on – one of the 1st truly ‘heavy’ bands and a band whose influence has slowly grown over the years (thrilling Metallica among others).  This 2nd LP maintains the original line-up of Shelley, Bourge & Phillips and this copy has superb vinyl for a top grade rock collection.  No reserve!
