Budgie : Budgie 1L/1L 1st Press Red/Pink 'Dogbone' Label MCA
This very collectable first pressing plays with superb audio for the vast majority and a detailed grading is given below. There is a little interference of which the most obvious is at the start of S1 but it does not last long! From then onwards it is a great ride with only minimal 'background' mainly on some of the intros but the clarity and power of the audio for the large part is absolutely stunning! It was of course produced by Rodger Bain of Black Sabbath fame and recorded at the famous Rockfield Studios in South Wales not far from me! The audio has certainly retained the definition and richness that is synonymous with Rodger Bain recordings.
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the poly-lined inner is also in superb order although is probably not the original. As this is a first press it has the red/pink dogbone labels. It also one of the earliest first pressings as it has only a single stamper on each side.
MKPS 2018 / 7-LNMG-240-1L / 7-LNMG-241-1L // I 1 / H 1
The audio on S1 is Mint(-) for majority (T1 intro G for a few seconds / T2 intro VG- for 3/4 seconds / T3 Near Mint-)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-) for majority (T1 Near Mint- / T2 intro Ex- / T3 intro Ex+ / T4 VG last couple of seconds)
The cover is Ex-
The inner sleeve is Near Mint-
The 'dogbone' labels are Near Mint
Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very healthy glossy sheen. There is only one tiny 3/4mm scratch at the start of S1 but apart from that it is very clean with only some very faint sleeve removal hairlines on each side. The red/pink 'dogbone' labels have no marking and only minimal spindle wear and have retained all of their original colour.
Play grading
The intro on 'Guts' has about eight clicks on the intro but by the time Shelley's vocal begins the playback cannot be faulted. From then the audio is as strong and deep as you would it to be on this classic debut album. There are no ticks, clicks or pops and no background static either. I will grade the intro as G but the remainder is most definitely Mint
The acoustic intro on 'Everything In My Heart' again has three clicks and a couple of lighter ticks but the good news is the music still comes through very clearly. From then on this brief number has no interference at all. This intro is VG- but is again Mint for the remainder.
'The Author' plays with great clarity from the get go with only a couple of dust ticks on the intro. The first two minutes of this classic are of course very quiet and yet the audio is near perfect with only a couple of very light clicks towards the end of this section. As the volume increases the playback is stunning! It continues to play in that true Budgie style with remarkable power and depth and...no interference and the 'high octane' end section is breathtaking! One of those turn it up to max moments with no distortion whatsoever. The vast majority is Mint but overall I think a Near Mint- grade is deserved.
The percussive intro on the timeless classic 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' has no 'background' and you just imagine them 'knocking' on various implements in Rockfield in order to get the desired affect! As Bourge enters the scene the audio is so impressive as is Shelley's first vocal and it continues to play with stunning quality. The 'I got a feeling inside' vocal plays perfectly and that of course leads in to one of the finest riffs ever written in rock! It plays with a sonic quality that is second to none and this entire section proceeds in the same STUNNING way with no intrusion at all. The bass is such a vital part of the Budgie 'sound' and it so deep and strong and adds so much to the mix, not forgetting Philips' powerful drumming of course. I cannot overstate just how incredible the audio is here - there is no groove wear, no 'muddiness' to the sound and it just plays with sublime precision. So good I had to play it twice! The final vocal is also faultless and overall this infinitely deserves a Mint- grade. What a version!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
'Rape Of The Locks' on S2 has only minimal static on the intro (i.e. very minimal!) and as the volume ramps up the audio is superb. The opening vocal is of the same standard and the playback can accurately be described 'as new'. It proceeds to play with age defying clarity during the long instrumental section and has only the lightest of static for a couple of seconds just prior to the next vocal. The rest of the track plays with great precision with no sign of any 'background'. So the intro is Near Mint- but the remainder is Mint- for sure.
The intro on 'All Night Petrol' has only four light tick sounds and the opening vocal is flawless. Thereafter it plays so well with no interference as such, just one light tick about two minutes in. The mid solo is so deep and powerful and the percussive/bass section that follows also plays with tremendous quality. The original sonic quality is still there and to the very end there is no interference. So again the vast majority is Mint- but with an Ex- intro.
'You And I' has only 4/5 very light ticks on the intro and they are not intrusive in any way. This acoustic track then plays so clearly throughout - an Ex+ intro but Mint for the remainder.
The intro on the absolute classic 'Homicidal Suicidal' plays to perfection (yes!) and Shelley's first vocal is equally as good. From that point on it plays with STUNNING precision and that deep and rich Budgie sound is very much prevalent. This is playing so well for a 50 year old record! There are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and even the 'quieter' section towards the end where the pace drops plays with wonderful clarity, just a couple of barely audible dust ticks. The super 'heavy' bass section then plays with incredible definition and the 'high octane' finish just has one pop very near the end. Once again 99% is Mint but I will say VG+ for the final couple of seconds.
In summary this very collectable first pressing plays to a very high standard with only minimal interference. I guess the most intrusive is the first few seconds on the opening track but at least the remainder is without fault. Elsewhere there is only a little 'background' on some of the intros and on the final note of the album but overall the clarity, depth and power of the audio is very impressive. Not quite perfect of course but a damn fine album nonetheless that has been very well looked after over the last 50 years.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with only very minimal shelf wear and when you consider it isn't laminated it has withstood the test of time extremely well. The edges have very little rubbing and the thin pinched spine is very clean with only minor compression here and there. There is only minimal corner wear and the opening edge has hardly any handling wear also. The front cover has only faint ringwear and a couple of minor crease lines and a very small corner crease top left. The back cover again has a couple of faint creases and just a little ringwear near the top. Both sides have retained their original colour extremely well and overall this is a fine example of this cover.
I do not think this poly-lined blue Stereo inner is the original one as it is dated 4-74 on one side but it is the right type if you see what I mean. It is in superb order with no side splits, tears or marking and barely any creasing.
