Budgie : Budgie 1L / 1L 1st Press Red / Pink 'Dogbone' Label 1971

This classic first pressing plays to a very high standard with no real intrusion.  There are just a few light static ticks here and there but no clicks or pops.  Overall the clarity and depth of sound is very impressive and the classics 'The Author', 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' and 'Homicidal Suicidal' all play with stunning quality.  Even the quieter tracks 'Everything In My Heart' and 'You And I' play with exceptional clarity which is a rarity.

This version has the rarer laminated front cover and is very clean with only a little shelf wear mainly in a couple of corners.  The inner sleeve (probably not the original) has only some light creasing and a couple of minor spots.

A first press has the red / pink 'dog bone' labels and the 1L / 1L matrix.  It was not printed in vast numbers!

Visual description

The vinyl still has a strong glossy sheen and there are no marks or scratches to be seen.  Under a bright light I can see a number of faint sleeve removal hairlines but they are superficial as they have no affect on the audio.  The red / pink 'dogbone' labels are unmarked and have only minimal spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Guts' has only the lightest of background static and as Philips and Shelley join in the audio is faultless.  The opening vocal is perfect also and the second vocal is close to that with just one very brief scratch sound, about half a second!  From then on it plays with that typical deep, strong Budgie sound.  There is no intrusion on the audio and the clarity, depth and power is stunning.  A Near Mint start to this classic debut album.

'Everything In My Heart' plays beautifully start to finish with no background not even a single dust tick.  The clarity is 'as new' and Mint is very much deserved.  Not bad for a quiet acoustic number!

The quiet two minute intro on 'The Author' has a little light static at the beginning and then plays with exceptional clarity for the remainder.  Just a handful of minor statics during Shelley's vocal.  Bourge's first classic riff is superb, the power and depth could not be any more impressive.  Shelley's high octane vocal combines perfectly with this track and his deep bass adds so much to the sound especially on a clean vinyl such as this.  The mid instrumental demands to be played loud and there is no distortion on the top end and no interference either!  The final vocal is just as strong - the start of the intro is Ex+ and the rest is Mint without doubt, a stunning version.

The intro on the classic 'Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman' is near perfect with only a handful of mega quiet statics.  As the volume increases the playback is flawless and Shelley's opening vocal is just as impressive.  The following instrumental has no intrusion and of course you're just waiting for that first classic up-tempo riff to kick in!  One of the finest in heavy rock and it does not disappoint!  Preceded by Shelley's vocal and superb bass line it then plays with sublime power and definition and it continues in the same precise way.  Every section of this classic instrumental delivers in every way, I cannot emphasise enough how well it plays.  The sonic quality is out of this world!  The end section including the final vocal is on the same level and I am confident in grading this all time classic as Mint- it truly is a sensational version.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro on 'Rape Of The Locks' has some light static ticks but again they are not intrusive.  Once the track kicks into gear the playback is so strong and deep and I only 'picked up' a couple of minor ticks during Shelley's first vocal.  From then on it plays so clearly - the mid instrumental has a small number of quiet statics and a couple of slightly more obvious ones towards the end, not clicks though!  The final vocal / instrumental section has no intrusion as such, just a little static right at the end.  Overall I think Ex+ is about right.

The intro on 'All Night Petrol' has a couple of light statics only and the opening vocal then plays with perfect clarity.  From then on it plays with great clarity and power with only a handful of minor static ticks.  Bourge's solo section is so strong and the driving percussive / bass section is equally as good.  The final vocal section / instrumental is superb and Near Mint- is an honest assessment of audio.

The acoustic 'You And I' has 3/4 light statics on the intro and then the vocal is nigh on perfect with only a couple of background statics.  One static tick right at the end of the fade out but the audio here is very clean and Near Mint is fair.

'Homicidal Suicidal' begins perfectly - another classic here of course.  The opening riff is 'as new' and Shelley's opening vocal is just as strong.  The clarity and depth though every section is so impressive and there is nothing getting in the way of the audio, the first long instrumental is a prime example of that, superb sound!  There are a couple of light ticks at the start of the next vocal and the next instrumental is as close to perfect as is possible.  The first 'quieter' section plays very clearly and Shelley's 'heavy' bass solo / vocal section is stunning.  The end crescendo / percussive section rounds off this classic perfectly with no interference or distortion.  A very impressive Near Mint version.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  The edges have no rubbing and the thin spine is very clean with only minimal wear on each corner.  The right hand corners have barely any wear and the opening edge is close to perfect also.  The laminated front cover has some faint marking in the lower left corner, a little wear top left and a little laminate creasing top right.  A little marking running down the right but that is common because this thin section is not laminated.  The back cover is very clean with only a couple of tiny faint marks near the top and some light creasing near the top left corner.

The plain white die-cut inner sleeve is in excellent shape with no side splits or tears and has only light creasing and a couple of minor marks.

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
