BUDDY HOLLY & CRICKETS 2pcs That'll Be The Day / Oh Boy! 45 Brunswick Rockabilly
Two original singles from Buddy Holly's Texas-formed band The Crickets. The first single is "That'll Be The Day" with "I'm Lookin' For Someone To Love" on the B-side and the second is "Oh, Boy!" with "Not Fade Away" on the flip.
Both records were released on the Brunswick label in 1957 - "That'll Be / I'm Lookin' is a Richmond pressing (identified by the "◈" symbol following the B-side label matrix number), pressed by Decca Records Pressing Plant in Richmond, IN. -
Oh Boy / Not Fade is a Gloversville pressing (identified by the "✤" symbol following the B-side label matrix), pressed by Decca Records Pressing Plant in Gloversville, NY.
"That'll Be The Day" was originally recorded by The Three Tunes for Decca in 1956 but never released, then re-recorded by The Crickets for Brunswick and released in 1957 becoming a massive success for the band - not only was it their first hit record (peaking at No.3 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart), it also went on to become certified gold (a million+ US sales) by the RIAA in 1969, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and placed in the National Recording Registry (a list of culturally/historically/aesthetically important recordings in the US) in 2005.
"Oh, Boy!", originally recorded as a demo by Sonny West at Norman Petty Studios, was later presented by Petty to Holly and subsequently recorded by The Crickets becoming another a huge hit for the group. It peaked at No.10 on the US charts (No.3 on the UK charts) in early 1958 and has been inspiring covers ever since - some of the most notable by Bobby Ve, Jackie DeShannon, Everly Brothers, Wanda Jackson, Los Lobos, Stray Cats, Grateful Dead, etc.
*Both discs are in VG+/VG++ condition - they appear to have been very well-kept with only a few small hairlines/sleeve scuffs, none that would affect playback or cause any skips, distortion, etc. Both discs retain a good amount of gloss and shine, though they would (of course) benefit from a good deep cleaning in an ultrasonic machine, or with a microfiber cloth and mild solution, or from whatever your preferred cleaning method might be.
Red and silver Brunswick labels are nice and clean.
Neither has it's original outer or inner sleeve. They will, however, be shipped out in separate plain-white/generic paper sleeves with plastic covers (and will be professionally packed) to keep them as safe as possible during transit.
Shipped with USPS media mail.
Overall, both copies are in great shape, especially considering that they're 64+ years old now.
Essential pieces of music for any and every collection - the sound that defined the 50s and shaped music to follow! Don't let these classic Rock 'n' Roll / Rockabilly 45s slip through your fingers!
