BUUDY HOLLY & THE CRICKETS, 'THE "CHIRPING" CRICKETS' LP. THIS WAS THEIR DEBUT RECORD ON THE BRUNSWICK LABEL. THIS IS A FIRST PRESSING WITH THE SO CALLED "TEXTURED" COVER AND THE SILVER LETTERS LABEL.
The cover has no mark, no tears/rips, no repairs, no tape or residue and no staining. If I had to rate it, I would put it at VG+ but grading may be subjective so I would rather you decide after seeing the photos and reading the description. First, it is very rare to find this 50 year old (plus) record with no stains or writing. It displays very nicely. The flaws should be visible in the photos. The primary flaw is that the corners are bent/creased. This may have happened recently, since it was shipped to me and described as NM. Maybe it happened in shipping and could be lessened over time, but it's keeping it from a NM rating for me. Check out Photo 3 and you'll get a good view of the crease. The good part is, the creases are outside the band's cover photo so they don't detract all that much, especially for display purposes. The top seam has a split about half way which can be seen in photo 5. The bottom seam is intact except for some soft fraying at the opening. The spine is in excellent condition with most of the lettering visible and just some "bumpy" spots. Overall, this is a good example of a textured cover.
The labels are very nice with bold silver lettering. If you place the labels directly under a bright light you can see faint outlines of thin lines - I tried to show that with a flash photo. The original inner sleeve is not presnt - sorry.
The vinyl is thick, heavy and inflexible (doesn't bend.) This is typical of the higher quality first pressings from the 1950's. I played it through twice and there are no skips. There is some background noise, especially on the first couple of songs. One great thing about these first pressing vinyl LP's is the "presence" of the sound, especially of the instruments. Listen to the guitar break on "Not Fade Away" and it sounds like Niki Sullivan is playing right there in your room. The clarity of the cymbals and the deep, rich echo of the vocal on "You've Got Love" make it feel like you're in the studio with the band. I don't know why a CD can't replicate that kind of sound transfer, but if you've never heard this LP on a first press vinyl it will sound like you are hearing some of the songs for the first time. The background noise is less noticeable on Side 2 so it was probably played less than Side 1. Luckily, the quieter, lesser known songs like "Last Night" and "Send Me Some Loving" have almost no backround noise. By the way, 2 of the songs "You've Got Love" and "An Empty Cup" were co-written by Roy Orbison, a fellow Texan who was just a little older than Buddy Holly. It's hard to grade the LP since the quality varies as described, but it for comparison purposes I would call it a VG+ LP.
