There is something palpably avant-garde in the frenetic energy of Owens' unmistakably American (read: Bakersfield) sound set against the cultural backdrop of Tokyo. However, Buck Owens & His Buckaroos prove the adage that the currency of music defies borders and is indeed the universal language. On Buck Owens & His Buckaroos in Japan!, the band rises to the occasion, performing perennial favorites and previewing tracks from its upcoming album, It Takes People Like You to Make People Like Me. The Buckaroos -- under the direction of Don Rich -- recreate a very Western concert experience. A prime example occurs during Owens' spoken-word prelude, signifying the importance of the Mississippi River in American geography as depicted in "Fishin' on the Mississippi." The band then launches into the song with the bold verve of true Yankee pride. Buck Owens & His Buckaroos frequently display their seemingly double-jointed sense of rhythm. From right out of the gate, their opening number "Adios, Farewell, Goodbye, Good Luck, So Long" features a blazing guitar solo from Rich supported by the taut flexibility of an intuitive musical organization. The audience's affection for tracks such as the ultimately catchy "Open Up Your Heart" propels the quintet's performance level to exceed, at times, the familiar studio version. The instrumentals are also top-shelf and performed with the added edge a live audience often provides. Such is the case with Owens' Eastern-flavored "Tokyo Polka," the Rich masterwork "Fiddle Polka," and Willie Cantu's brief "Drums So Low" percussion solo. History has only reinforced the status of Buck Owens & His Buckaroos in Japan! as a key component not only in the canon of Buck Owens & His Buckaroos, but additionally as part of any comprehensive overview of the state of popular C&W music in the mid-'60s.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the spine.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
