On PLAYBACK #45
PLAY BACK was a way that Columbia could prompt curious record buyers to help promote their new artists. If you signed up, then once a month you would get a little 7inch single with some new songs, and a booklet with hype about new Columbia releases, not necessarily those on the new record.
This single (Playback #45) and went out to subscribers in 1973. Considering that “Blinded By The Light” was the first ever single from Springsteen, this was likely the first time any of those who received this freebie single had ever heard of Bruce Springsteen. They must not have been very impressed, as the single that Columbia issued of this same track failed to get into the charts as well, but the LP would prove to sell OK.
This Playback EP might have even been sent out in advance of the album’s March 1973 release, I can’t say as the paperwork with this is all missing, all I’ve got here is the sleeve and record.
On the other side is another new release from ’73: Andy Pratt sings “Avenging Annie”
