Soul On Top has always been one of James Brown's more surprising and under celebrated albums. It was released in 1970, at a time when the Godfather of Soul was at the peak of his powers. Yet while most of Brown's releases of the period showcased his thrusting brand of sexually charged funk, Soul On Top saw him cover jazz, soul and big band standards in the company of Louie Belson's 18-piece "jazz orchestra". While hardly revolutionary - unlike, say, many of his albums of the time - the combination of Brown's impassioned vocals and Oliver Nelson's swinging arrangements still sounds fantastic. The cover of Brown's own "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" is particularly potent, and almost worth the admission price alone.
