BROTHER ROBERT LEE PAIGE -- The Zion Song -- hard to find, original mid-1970's U.S. album. For fans of outsider music and black Southern gospel-folk in the Alan Lomax tradition, this is a fairly amazing private press album of incredibly raw and powerful performances by Brother Robert Lee Paige who was born in 1909 in Chambers County, Alabama and served as pianist and singer with a number of Baptist churches in the area. Paige died in 1973; these performances were recorded on cassette tape sometime before that, likely late 1960's or early 1970's, and after his death they were released on this completely obscure and essentially unknown private press album. Sound quality is incredibly primitive and echo-filled, just Paige's voice and minimalist piano occasionally accompanied by female chorus. Overall effect is stunningly powerful -- again, if you like the landmark 1950's Alan Lomax Southern Gospel albums, you will likely flip for this. See scan above for song listing.
