Brief Info: They say there is no substitute for class – and Brenda Lee simply exudes it. One of the most famous American singers of the 1960s, the small lady with the big voice and affectionally known as ‘Little Miss Dynamite’. This album issued in 1969 in the United States, this a superb UK copy on the Decca-pressed MCA label with the collectable dog bone format. Appearing little played with a lovely laminated cover – an album not just for fans of the lady, but also label collectors, quite an elusive one on this format.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The back is matt and smooth, it includes the mono/stereo peep-hole, this one filled with the blue, stereo code Decca-style inner sleeve. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group.

Lamination & Front: The intensity of the black backdrop is enhanced still further by the very shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has no lifting and only gentle dulling arcs at the top and bottom. Elsewhere very light and faint as seen under light. Half a dozen half moon surface creases near the right edge area ranging from tiny to moderate. A very attractive front and one not seen too often as a UK early pressing.

Cover Back: Little to fault on this hardly aged predominately white back. Any grubbiness or set-off little, very gentle and faint, hardly any rubbing or creasing. The peep-hole is pristine.

Top Edge: Mostly straight with minimal hint of bowing and with no surface wear.

Bottom Edge: If anything, even better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on, any rippling equally light. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Practically perfect: solid, straight with barely any compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs are minuscule and light, excellent shape with no bashes retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very attractive early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): pressed by Decca for MCA, so a Decca polylined inner sleeve, this in blue to fill the rear main cover peep-hole to denote a stereo record inside. Actually asking myself, was a mono copy of this actually available into 1971?, but the back cover lists two separate catalogue numbers for each mode. This inner is date-coded 5-71 (May 1971) and appears hardly aged. Two immaculate window circles and the polylining clear, the paper has very little creasing, any browning to the seam adhesive light. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed bt Decca. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. One small mark on side two shows more, but does nothing. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality, and elusive album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. What a voice Brenda has, this is pop vocal quality at its best, heard here to maximum advantage. Few copies will outperform this early UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This also on one my favourite label designs, these are never easy to find and collectable. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
