IRMA THOMAS (1964)

How in the world did the wrong side of a record become such a big hit? There have been many stories of songs that were originally the 'B' side of the record being turned over by DJs and becoming classics. But here's a case where the record never got turned over, and the song missed out on US audiences altogether.

Irma Thomas had her first US pop chart hit with the other side of this single; "Wish Someone Would Care." It's a good little tune, and climbed up the charts to a respectable #17 in March of 1964.

But on the other side of that single was a monster of a soul tune, the masterful "Breakaway." It was up beat, danceable, the very best that Jackie DeShannon had written to date. In the UK the record would become an underground classic and in 1983 would get a chart revival when TV comedian Tracey Ullman would re-record it (sounding just like the original) and take it nearly to the top of the charts.

These days it's one of those Northern Soul songs that everyone knows and for good reason..... it's a great tune! VINYL PRESSING – not styrene.
