DJ MEME PRESENTS: REBOOT CLASSICS Extended, remixed and vitaminized versions like you've never heard...and seen
DJ Meme presents: Classics Reboot vol 1 began to be conceived during the pandemic, when, like the vast majority of DJs on the planet, Meme parked his case at home and started to have something rare for this category of workers who live on the road or turning nights around: free time. He sat down at his computer and began going through his own collection of DAT tapes.
The songs were chosen like a DJ would choose the next track to play on the dance floor. There are two people with whom, during the selection process, I chatted, they were the DJs Zé Pedro and Marky, who understand a lot about Brazilian music and were a kind of ambassadors for this work.
The first completed song, of the ten contained in the album, was "Fullgás", by Marina Lima. "When the pandemic started, we had nowhere to go, we had nowhere to play, we had nothing to do, right? We started doing lives. One day I went to the studio and decided to get my box of DATs. When I I took Marina's tape, discovered that it had all the channels. Then I played it on the computer and started playing. When I saw it, the music started to take shape. I started doing it as a joke, but taking it seriously. I sent it to Zé Pedro and to Marky and they went crazy. Marky did a live just to play the song. Everyone kept asking for the song", he remembers.
Hence the idea of, why not, reworking incredible songs that left the repertoire of younger generations not because of a lack of quality or genius, but because they sound from another time.
"I called Paulo Lima, who is the president of the record label [Universal], and told him about my idea. I sent Marina the remix and he loved it: 'Let's do it'", he says. Meme then asked for carte blanche to touch the record company's collection, which was granted.
“They started opening files for me and converting them to digital.” The next step was to obtain authorizations from the artists. "My luck is that I started doing this during a period where everything was a bit at a standstill, and these authorizations came out more easily. The coolest thing is that all the artists, including Bethânia and Caetano, authorized me from the beginning to get my hands on on the tapes to change and, later, they all authorized the remix to be made". "It's not an album for the dance floor. It's an album of remixes, in which I show the original arrangement, showing the diversity of that song that has been known for over 30 years", details Meme.
INSIDE A REMIX The album recounts an important part of Brazilian music, with iconic artists from various eras and musical styles. It starts with "Daqui pro Méier", by Ed Motta, rescues Pessoa, a rare gem from Dalto whose Meme version reveals how much the track has always been an electro à la "Together in Electric Dreams" (by Giorgio Moroder and Phil Oakey), brings Caetano Veloso to a disco music track, puts a sensual shine on "Cheiro de Amor", by Maria Bethânia, plays "Óculos", by Paralamas, from the 80s for a current sound.
It's interesting to open a kinship to talk about the genesis of the word remix, which in the early days simply meant mixing (mixing the different sound tracks) again (re-mixing). When the first producers began to create new versions based on excerpts from previously released songs, this technique was called remix. There are, however, other ways of talking about these versions, such as rework, re-edit and reboot, which gives the album its name. But then, how is a remix created by Meme?
"These remixes are very specific, completely different from what I've been doing for over 30 years. The remix usually comes to order. I always ask for the original parts. I need those separate guitars as they were recorded without processing. Why? Because I'm just going to remix. Now this remix album is nothing more than the same process I did when I started at 20 years old. There was no way to put electronics in the middle, there was no way to make a house version. That came a little later. There in the In the beginning, you put the tape in the machine and used the original elements. Today we usually want to give our face. Then we put an electronic beat, a bass line. In this album the elements that were added are very subtle, so as not to hurt the original arrangement. Do not interfere harmonically, with musical notes. For example, Dalto and 'Lindo Lago do Amor', if you compare one to the other, you will hear percussions that are not present in the originals, but are things that accompany the original beat . I changed the structure using what was already inside", he explains.
Among the surprises found on the tapes was an excerpt of Lady Zu singing in English. "There are things that you don't hear in the original because they weren't used. For example, for Lady, I found a voice in English, so I took an excerpt from the recording and put it in the middle", he says. "But I think my biggest surprise was hearing Dalto. The music is all electronic, there's no guitar, there's no bass. It's all just one man playing, Lauro Salazar. He did the all-electronic arrangement at Mayrton's request. Bahia, who was the producer of the track. At the time they didn't have the technology to sound so electronic in Brazil. Because when you listen to the remix version until Dalto starts singing it feels like we're listening to Human League", he compares. The track that was most different from the original version is "Quero Um Baby Seu", by Caetano. "In this version, I pushed my self-imposed limits. I changed the beats and added strings", says Meme.
