Description

What good is it for Boris to release a three-volume 7" series called Japanese Heavy Rock Hits? The Japanese power-trio has been writing nothing but heavy rock hits since 1992. At this point, is anybody really expecting anything else from them? In any event, heavy rock is exactly what "8", the A-side to Vol. 1, delivers. The song's opening minute-and-a-half-- all low-voltage metal noodling-- is just a red herring designed to get people to goose the volume a little. Don’t be fooled. When "8" finally lifts off, it does so with enough power to crush your stereo system's speaker cones into dust. They aren't kidding about the "hits" part, either. This is Boris at its most anthemic. Fuzzy chords chug at full-velocity. The guitar solo-- all high range shredding-- is the kind of thing that's impossible to play without teased hair and a double-necked guitar (they have one of these). The vocals soar into registers that are generally verboten outside of Queensrhyche. None of which is particularly new for Boris.
