BOOKER ERVIN – THE BOOK COOKS – BETHLEHEM BCP 6048 – VG+ - MONO
This is Booker Ervin’s first recording session and it was recorded on April 6, 1960. It features Booker Ervin on tenor, Zoot Sims on tenor, Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, George Tucker on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. SIDE 1: THE BLUE BOOK; GET IT and LITTLE JANE. SIDE 2: THE BOOK COOKS; LARGO and POOR BUTTERFLY. This LP was formally the property of the now defunct Jazz radio station, KNOB, out of Long Beach, CA in the 1960s. It was run by Sleep Stein. Although played, Sleepy took relatively good care of his LPs, as this gets a VG+ Rating. This is a MONO recording.
I have based my VG+ rating for the LP for the following reasons. There are some marks on the vinyl, but they are light and they do not interfere with play. There are marks on both sides of the spindle hole, but the label was not correctly placed and you can see where they missed the spindle hole. There is a taped bottom seam on the record jacket. There is a record library number 2839 on the top right corner of the liner notes and “RADIO STATION KNOB” is stamped in red on the liner notes. The cover is in excellent condition with some signs of wear, but overall, it’s in good condition. I couldn’t resist not putting it out, as KNOB had a large impact on the LA Jazz Scene in the 1950s and ‘60s. If you have any questions, please email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
