WEB REVIEW>>>>The La Playas (not to be confused with the La Plata Sextet, a knockoff on Seeco) were the most popular group on New York's Mardi Gras label. Although in later years numbering as high as a dozen players, the group originally was a spare sextet distinguished by a strong, rhythm-guitar sound. The guitar and lively tempos always made them as much Latin rock as progressive Latin. Their association with Tito Rodriguez meant sharing key members of what would become the Eddie Palmieri outfit. That factor alone makes some of the United Artists records notable, while the two Musicor LPs are unique for other reasons. Papas Fritas really is mod Latin rock in The Champs style. It's lightweight but fun, with a few excellent tunes. The subsequent "Bailando el Boogaloo" LP features Louie Ramirez, interesting jazz elements, and one very strong boogaloo rarity which makes the whole thing a "holy grail" of Latin soul. Both of these LPs are nearly impossible to find (well I found it!!); by contrast the Mardi Gras and UA records can be merely elusive.

Buying: Snap up the Musicor items if you see them; almost all the Mardi Gras and United Artists LPs are very worthwhile. But beware of budget-label reissues and repackagings.

Terrific 1967 dance record by the Payo Alicea's great sextet!!featuring Vitin Avilés and Chris Gonzalezon vocals. With arrangements by Louie Ramirez, Ray Santos & El Negro Vivar (on trumpet??, probably), how could you go wrong? You will notice the tracks El Chico's Boogaloo & Hunca Munca...well if you ever visited the famous El San Juan Intercontinental Hotel in Isla Verde, PR then you will recognize those 2 famous ballrooms named that way...I remember!!...RARE!!!! (I found 2 sites selling it...1 in not good conditions at $68.00 the other at $240.00!!

  MINT: Unplayed, still sealed.   M- (NM) Played vinyl but has no marks and plays with very mimimal or no surface noise.   VG++ (Excellent): Played vinyl has one or two light marks and plays with none or very minimal surface noise.   VG+: Played vinyl has more than a few marks and plays with some light surface noise but no skips. Strong sound!.   VG: Well played vinyl has a lot of surface marks but no deep scratches, vinyl plays with surface noise but sound quality is still good. No Skips.
