Label Condition: Both clean and attractive, spindle marks are quite numerous, more than I would usually offer, but these are fine and quite faint, they show more under light. These are somewhat misleading for the condition of the record which looks lovely. Sound quality is impressive and clean throughout with very little at all unwanted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the lesser-mentioned ‘classics’ from this famous music year. Originally formed as a 1920s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their nichè elsewhere. This debut album, dedicated to King Kong, from the kings of British satire of this time. A brilliant album, my personal favourite of the few they made, and I never tire hearing it. It includes some absolutely wonderful songs, witty, catchy and, of course, a little eccentric, all are priceless gems – the Bonzos at their absolute best. Comedy is blended with zany Vaudeville jazz, pop and psychedelia. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became relatively popular in the late 1960’s and had regular television appearances on programmes like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’. They even had a hit single later with ‘The Urban Spaceman’. The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué – all in typically ‘British’ style. Wacky, inventive and original, this is great entertainment. This copy on offer is an early mono on the blue Liberty label. The record is in lovely clean condition, the spindle marks do not the true story, the music is very clean and fully focused with no mono distortion or surface noise. One I enjoyed immensely, this includes the quite elusive book as well as the rarer fully laminated cover. A copy many collectors will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the polylined inner sleeve and the large format book.

Cover Lamination: Both retain excellent shine with few marks and any lifting light on the back spine edge, having a white background on this area, it shows little. Any dulling little and light, the same for creases, this original mono prefix cover has aged little and both sides area attractively fresh.

Top Edge: Largely straight with minimal hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: Almost as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, mostly straight with any compression little and light, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn as seen, centering a little low in places.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very fine shape mostly retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A rarer original fully laminated version in fine all-round condition. This should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: a Polydor polylined inner sleeve and date coded 117 (November 1967). Mainly marked down for crinkle and creasing, but both window circles neat and undamaged, the lining still quite clear. The paper quite lightly discoloured, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Book: NEAR EXCELLENT: a 12-page black and white book, most pages seen in my pictures. Solidly intact with the two original staples that are untarnished or loosened. Minor crinkle traces and minimal creasing to the pages which are all neat and aged little. A fairly small stain mark on the outside back cover, little else in that respect. A very fine example of this quite elusive book that only gives gentle clues of age – and its fast approaching 50.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a very fine visual copy that is generally clean with impressive shine and heavily pressed. A few light surface marks and very fine more wispy ones seen under bright light. The spindle marks may suggest this has been played a number of times, but if so, with mainly due care, any surface marks or traces have no affect on the impressive clean sound. Visually a lovely record fast approaching 50-years-old, it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant debut album plays above its visual grading with little to really fault, a very impressive mono example that still gives almost its very best, even played on my revealing LP12 Sondek. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal and faint, overall an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. A tough and durable thickly pressed Liberty record unruined by blunted old stylus. The content, wit and satire of this album is simply sublime, it almost refuses to age and can be enjoyed near to the maximum on this vintage early copy. One to please many collectors and meriting strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
