Label/Format: Liberty – original blue format with smooth matt surfaces.

Label Condition: In terms of wear or spindle marks, barely any at all. The only minor issue is, the polylining has left dull streaks on the surface, just like they often do to the record’s surface. That HAS been avoided and the playing surfaces are in supreme condition. The fact is, this copy has probably not been removed from the original inner for decades and and appears hardly even played. These dulling surface blemishes show little with full-on viewing anyway and only the connoisseur purist would have any issue.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Rarer in stereo: most who bought this album on issue chose the mono format with stereo records still being in the minority. Hardly played copies that include the 1967 date-code inner, fully laminated first design cover and the book are harder still.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the lesser-mentioned ‘classics’ from this famous music year. Originally formed as a 1920s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their nichè elsewhere. This debut album, dedicated to King Kong, from the British kings of satire from this time. A brilliant album, my personal favourite of theres and I never tire hearing it. It includes some absolutely wonderful songs, witty, catchy and, of course, a little eccentric, all are priceless gems – the Bonzos at their absolute best. Comedy and satire are blended with zany jazz, pop and psychedelia. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became relatively popular in the late 60’s and even had regular TV appearances on programmes like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’. They even had a hit single later with ‘The Urban Spaceman’. The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué – all in typically ‘British’ style. Wacky, zany, inventive and original, this is great entertainment and this vintage stereo copy, that images brilliantly, does it maximum justice. One of the earliest examples and this has survived the perilous time of issue outstandingly well, this appears hardly even played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single fully laminated cover that has the first design back that was later changed. Also even slightly later ones were only laminated on the front. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and is the correct LBS stereo. The back has the stereo record warning for mono record player owners as seen in close-up. Also the Polydor style date coded inner sleeve is included along with the scarce book.

Lamination – Front & Back: Firstly, first issues were fully laminated as per this and the back had slightly different artwork. The laminate on the front has dulled a little but still retains fine clarity and only really notices with angled viewing. The back is shinier. Minimal marks, not lifting and any creasing few and light. Not seen too many of these mono warning stickers in this style before, this has aged a little but clearly never picked at or removed.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both smooth, straight with minimal traces of ageing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening, even viewed end-on minimal and this guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solidly laminated, quite thin but still straight, any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn, the ends tapered in manufacture.

Corners: Again, little wear, a little tip toning but no dinks, very fine and mostly excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Just enough to gently remind of age, but for a cover around 47+ years old, this is very fine. Certainly rarer with the stereo information as well. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the polylined white inner has only fairly gently aged with little darkening mostly around the seams. The adhesive naturally darkens and is seldom avoided. One corner crease only and the window circles are pristine and the lining clear with gentle crinkle. This crinkle leaving dulling streaks on the labels BUT NOT on the record itself, this quite entrenched and without any doubt, not removed for many, many years. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this has the 117 (November 1967) date code making this elusive stereo example one of the first pressed and issued.

The Book: EXCELLENT(+): a 12-page black and white book that was only included with early copies and fast withdrawn, it is quite rare and many copies fails to have it. The pages secured with the two original staples, these being secure and unloosened with no tarnishing or rust. This has aged little and has minimal traces of usage or wear. A fine crease on the front cover but little else. The pages are practically all razor sharp and neat as is the whole book in general. Minimal handling and fully intact, more often seen with fingermarks on the matt black cover surface, once there, near impossible to remove. This has hardly anything and it’s inclusion a major bonus as many got lost, torn or never included in the first place.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): ultra clean with superb shine, jet black and solidly pressed, just the type of barely played record the discerning collector wants. When a 1967 record looks like this, they are very special, this was rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs, being a little to ‘out-there’ for most at the time. Any surface blemishes are incredibly few, fine and faint, even under bright light. Special mention about these incredibly fresh playing surfaces, they have NO inner bag rash or dulling at all. The labels have dulled, but somehow the record itself has avoided it – and that very unusual. Quite honestly, the lustre of this record comes close to reminding of new and the sound also is fantastic. For those, like me, who really are into this most wonderful and unique bands and weirdness, this is unmissable.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant and rarer stereo copy plays even above it’s impressive visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound (never take this for granted), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and this is a sublime real stereo copy (not processed from mono). It images brilliantly and really adds to the bizarre effects of this album. Still the age of the mono record, this rarer stereo version is not seen so often and being honest, I much prefer it. Indeed, if not owning a copy myself in this mode, this beauty would not be offered. Any unwanted sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted. This was a real pleasure to play-grade, I really love this album and it was a delight to hear with the first stereo sound. Nothing spoiled my pleasure when play-grading this zany classic. The songs quickly become addictive and it can be argued, the Bonzos were never quite this brilliant again. That said, the first four albums are superb, but this the ultimate. This record will prove immensely difficult to find like this again and finding a better one will certainly prove near impossible.

End Piece: A band musically more talented than given credit for and their music and satire broke new grounds at the time. A little crazy and eccentric and with the legendary Viv Stanshall in line-up who could be surprised? A superb record and sound, a very fine book and a clean, only gently aged cover, this merits my highest possible recommendation – bo-dowdy-oh.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
