This is Simon Green aka Bonobo's eighth studio album, and anticipation levels among his fanbase will be high - especially as he's announced that this may be his last ride on the traditional "record album, tour album" merry-go-round for a while. Written and recorded in Japan and California over a couple of years, Distance In Static is unlikely to disappoint his core constituency, with the overall MO being pretty much what it's always been: a melee of dusty samples, live organic instrumentation, found sounds and haunting vox from an array of collaborators, who this time include Grammy-winning Pakistani-American vocalist Arooj Aftab, indie star Nilufer Yanya and Japanese singer-songwriter Ichiko Aoba. Musically it tends generally to the lilting and ethereal, but that's not to say there aren't some tuffer, clubbier moments, too - see the hefty bottom end on 'Always On Your Side' and, best of all, 'You And Me', which comes on like a soundclash between house and Middle Eastern folk. If this marks a turning point in Bonobo's career, then he's exiting Phase 1 in fine style.
