Bob Mould's 1989 solo debut arrived in the wake of Hüsker Dü's breakup and announced a deliberate turn — acoustic guitars, cello, and open space where distortion had been. The album is quieter than anything Mould had released before, but not soft. The tension is still there; it just runs underneath.

"See A Little Light" became a Modern Rock chart single. "Wishing Well," "Poison Years," and "Whichever Way The Wind Blows" show the range — melodic, introspective, occasionally bleak.

The rhythm section is Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu) on bass and Anton Fier (Golden Palominos) on drums, with Jane Scarpantoni adding cello throughout.

Recorded at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, MN, Grog Kill Studio in Willow, NY, and mixed at Blue Jay Recording Studio in Carlisle, MA.

This is an original US first pressing on Virgin Records America (1-91240), as well as a first lacquer cut (SR-1) on both sides. The sound is as close to the Original Studio Masters as a record can be.

Mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk, New York, using DMM — Direct Metal Mastering, cut directly to copper rather than lacquer. The DMM designation is etched into the matrix on both sides.

Weinberg joined Masterdisk in 1977 and built a substantial mastering discography in rock and alternative music, including Nirvana's Nevermind, the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill, The Clash, Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Smashing Pumpkins. He received four Grammy nominations and four TEC Awards.

Manufactured by WEA for Atlantic Records, features dark charcoal label with blue inverted triangle — correct for the original first US issue.
