Description
On offer in this listing is baritone sax man Bob Gordon's only issued LP dating from 1954, on the Pacific Jazz Label, entitled "MEET MR. GORDON on Pacific Jazz PJ LP-12". This 10" LP is rare in it's own right but what makes this offering incredibly rare and possibly unique is that fact that this record was accompanied by a sheet of promotional copy/material on Bob Gordon, written by Will MacFarlane. In the 30 years I have been collecting records, I have never seen another copy of this insert sheet.
This sheet measures a legal sized 8 1/2" by 14" and is entitled "MEET MR. GORDON: The Bob Gordon Story: AN EXCLUSIVE PACIFIC JAZZ RECORDING ARTIST". What follows is an introduction to Bob Gordon and this specific recording, a short biography of the early part of his career, his influences, a mention of another Pacific Jazz LP he played on (PJ LP-9 with Chet Baker), and a mention of his association with Jack Montrose. Interestingly, the record and jacket show no signs of being a promo copy, but I think this particular record was given out to disc jockeys who were probably to read the enclosed copy on the air prior to playing a cut from the album. The other possibility is that this record and copy were a salesman sample given to a record shop owner or a distributor to entice a larger order and ultimately greater sales of the album.
Both the record disc and jacket are in excellent (EX) condition with just general light wear. The jacket has NO split seams with just light spine wear most noticeable in the corners. The record labels are nearly flawless. The record surface is clean, fresh, and shiny with just a few light paper scuffs. Overall this is a well above average record. I have always stored this record in a protective poly-sleeve with the disc itself stored outside of the jacket in a new paper sleeve. Please see the SCANS of the LP front and back covers, the promo copy, and the labels. If you have any questions or wish any additional scans of anything of interest, please feel free to contact me.
Preferred payment is PayPal but I may accept other forms of payment. If you wish to pay other than PayPal please contact me before the auction closes. Finally, please understand that the stated shipping charges are only approximate as the records have not been packed up as of yet. However it should not very different from the listed amount. Packing will be done very securely in a professional manner and if there is a major difference between the shipping charged and the actual amount, I will refund you the difference.
Since Gordon's unique voice was silenced prematurely by a tragic car crash in 1955, this, his only LP, is a rare collector's item in it's own right, and this particular album with the promotional insert being a possibly unique combination and a welcome addition to any high-end vintage jazz record collection.
