NOTE: photos of record labels don't do justice; Bright RED labels with black print always photograph badly for me, with blurred, indistinct appearing text/detail, ESPECIALLY Columbia!
Print on the labels is actually sharp, crisp solid black.

BOB DYLAN's 2nd album, where he really comes into his own.
Gone are the "Pretty Peggy-O", "Gospel Plow" and "House of THe Risin' Sun" traditional folk tunes, reverential to Woody Guthrie's legacy and well within the expected vocabulary and sentiment of the bohemian, college campus folk/protest dialogue, so in tune with the American folk movement of the time. Here Dylan finds something strong and deep inside and pulls it out in a whole new syntax -becoming the leading force in American folk music in one simple LP.
.
Songs like "Blowin' In The Wind", "Masters of War", "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" immediately signal, not just a new voice, but one that has moved into a level even beyond the revered Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie -saying what needs to be said, telling it straight and without any reserve or soft coating. Dylan knew that for things to change, the message had to be dialed up a notch -no kid gloves and no apologies.
.
"If that's all Freewheelin' had to offer, it wouldn't have had its seismic impact ... This is rich, imaginative NEW music, capturing the sound and spirit of America as much as that of Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams, or Elvis Presley.
.
Dylan, in many ways, recorded music that equaled this, but he never topped it."
.
Once here, folks also found his more personal, surreal songs such as "Bob Dylan's Dream" and "Talkin' World War III Blues", hearing something even more subversive and visionary; saying what they felt, but couldn't find the words to say. Dylan's lyrics were suddenly on subway and bus stop walls, in the liberal and even mainstream newspapers, on protest signs -being spread not so much like a new gospel, but like a secret handshake and the new voice of the unheard. He was instantly the leading light of both the folk and social protest movements.
.
It's hard today, for many to appreciate just how revolutionary this all really was at the time. But Dylan hit like an atom bomb, and nothing was ever the same again.
