Label/Format: CBS - original matt orange format with the main inner area textured, the outer rim areas are smooth.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few spindle marks, these being mostly fine and faint. This rarer mono copy also plays with lovely clean sound with little unwanted.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very fine solid weight.

Rarity: Scarce in mono and in the US it was the final Dylan to make the single channel format and is very rare indeed with minimal numbers pressed. Also copies in this type of condition are even harder to find, this one looks little played and sounds impressive. One of the very few examples I have seen to include the gold ‘Mono’ sticker on the cover.

Brief Info: Another brilliant album, his eighth, issued around 18 months after the masterpiece that was ‘Blonde on Blonde’. It was the penultimate mono album by Dylan as the format was slowly being phased-out, and by 1969 had largely done so for new albums. Between times he has been recovering from a major motorcycle accident and quite how the man could follow the previous album with something almost as good was an incredible achievement. With sparse instrumentation and totally wonderful songs, this stands high in his impressively long catalogue. With US mono versions very difficult to track down, a rarer chance for all to hear on this elusive UK mono cut version, this a lovely example many will cherish.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front lamination that covers all the edge folds. The back is unprotected, matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group and is the genuine mono cover with NO stereo references. So somewhat surprising to see a shaped gold shiny ‘Mono’ sticker on the back. This was getting to the time when mono and stereo records sales were equalling up, so it seems CBS were determined to make clear what copy was being sold. Also included is the CBS orange promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A really lovely looking front with genuine freshness and clean looks. The laminate retains excellent shine and clarity, also fully adhered with no lifting. A gentle crease near the bottom left corner, few others, any of which are fine, small and light. The goes for marks of which there are few being light and showing little. Even under light, minimal hint of dulling of friction rubs, this front is really quite impressive.

Cover Back: The matt back has little to fault bar a fine toning line on the very spine edge, this is where the laminate ends, quite rarely, this only just makes it on to the back with almost no overhang at all. Hardly creased or aged with no ringwear or rubbing. Not a great deal to fault with the scarce mono sticker either, any ‘pick’ edge marks are minuscule and I doubt if this has been removed, it retains fine shine overall.

Top & Bottom Edges: The bottom has a small light central rub, traces of adhesive smear mostly on the bottom, has darkened, but not very much is evident anyway. Both quite straight and smooth.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp to very sharp with hardly any wear or thickening, guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically as made, this is a fantastic spine. Solid, straight with barely any compression – the ends are nipped in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that remains fresh and impressively clear. Even the fine ends retain super definition with no knocks.

Corners: All excellent with hardly any hint of wear, shape sharp and crisp with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: An impressive example to please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and only marked down for natural discolouration on the seam adhesive areas. So a hint of age, but hardly any real wear and no damage. This an unlined promotional inner with two pristine window circles and all edges are unsplit (with no repairs). No creasing worthy of note, even the recessed and shaped top opening is crisp and incredibly neat, all strong indicators the record has seldom made the trip out.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably harsh at that. At this later era for the mono format, most who purchased them did so to play on the appropriate equipment. Many that are seen show the fact all too well with matching disappointing sound, penetrating scratches, dulled and grimy finger marked laden surfaces and grubby spindle-ridden labels. Chalk and cheese, this has NOTHING like that. This copy without doubt has received minimal usage, and then it appears mainly with due care. A super visual record that is very clean with excellent shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks are few and mainly fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and this has survived the ‘Dansette-era’ well. How many records this great age will have zero marks if scrutinised closely enough? - let’s be honest. This quality record should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more elusive mono example plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. The songs play impressively with little unwanted – the odd sporadic tick or two is near impossible to avoid on the quieter albums, remember this is at least a 46+-year-old mono record, how many will ever play without the odd gentle reminder what you actually listening too? Without any doubt a record that has avoided all the perils of blunt, chipped piledriver mono stylus from the distant past. We all know what so many of these single-channel records look and sound like these days. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, and clearly, the music presents itself differently from the standard stereo mix. I am certain this record has been played lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. I also remind I play all my records on a Linn LP12 Sondek, still one of the world’s most revealing turntables for which mono records were not really designed. But when found this clean, they are a thing of real beauty and nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading it. This late mono record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
