BOB DYLAN
Highway 61 Revisited

Columbia CL 2389 Original US Mono 2-Eye Pressing
360 Sound MONO Label — Matching 1C Matrices
Highway 61 Revisited is one of the monuments of 20th century American music, and this is the way the album first hit record stores in 1965: the original Columbia mono LP, catalog number CL 2389, on the red Columbia 2-eye label with “360 Sound” MONO printed at the bottom of the label.

This was Dylan at the exact point where the folk world, rock world, blues world, and literary world all collided. From the opening snare crack of “Like a Rolling Stone” through the sprawling closing statement of “Desolation Row,” this is the album where Dylan fully crossed into electric rock while still carrying the verbal density, menace, humor, and surrealism that made his 60s work so important. It is one of those records where the word “classic” is not hype; it is simply accurate.

The mono Columbia pressing is especially desirable because this is the original dedicated period format for the album. The mono mix has a punch, focus, and directness that is different from the stereo version, with Dylan’s vocal, the rhythm section, and the organ/guitar textures sitting together in a more concentrated way. For collectors of Dylan, Columbia mono pressings, and original 60s rock records, CL 2389 is one of the key titles.

This copy has the early red Columbia 2-eye labels with “360 Sound” MONO at the bottom. The deadwax is machine stamped and includes the small Customatrix “o” symbol followed by XLP110638-1C on Side One and the small Customatrix “o” symbol followed by XLP110639-1C on Side Two. I am not representing this as an absolute first stamper, but it is clearly an early original mono pressing, and the matching 1C matrices are exactly the sort of early manufacturing details collectors care about on a record like this.

PROVENANCE: This is part of the estate of my best friend of 42 years who passed away on April 27th from non-hodgkin lymphoma. Like me, Jeff was a serious collector of music in his younger days. While I grew up in Los Angeles, he grew up in San Francisco and most of his "estate" is SF and early rock based. Most of his albums are all first state, original releases, and some are rare anomalies. I will be slowly listing the albums from his estate, and all final proceeds will go to Jeff's family. To see all the albums in his estate currently listed CLICK HERE! or use the Advanced Search function atop your browser and search for JEFFSESTATE making sure Include Descriptions is checked. If nothing comes up, please let me know! There is some really rare and great stuff there...

Like ALL my records sold on ebay, this has been play tested from start to finish, and because this is an important early mono Dylan LP, I want to be very specific about exactly what it is and what it is not.

First, the jacket is in remarkable condition for a 1965 original Columbia LP. There are no seam splits and no ringwear. That is not something I get to say very often about original 60s jackets, especially on major rock titles that were actually bought, played, handled, and kept for decades. The cover presents beautifully.

The original early Columbia plastic-lined inner sleeve is not included. Those early round-edge plastic inners were notorious for being bad long-term storage sleeves, and Jeff was smart enough to remove it years ago. Unfortunately, he did not save the original inner. The record is now housed in a new acid-free inner sleeve, and I have also added a new acid-free outer sleeve for protection.

The labels are very clean and show no spiderwebbing at the spindle holes, which is always a good sign on a 60s record. The record has also been cleaned on my VPI HW record cleaning machine before play testing.

That said, this is not a perfect-play copy, and I am not going to pretend that it is. There is some surface noise present, the kind of background noise you expect from an original mono album that has been played, even if not abused. Side one has a couple of very light visual marks, but those did not translate into playback anomalies on my system. Side two has a couple of small marks, and those do play as small ticks during “Desolation Row.”

So, bottom line: this is a very desirable early original Columbia 2-eye mono pressing of Highway 61 Revisited with matching machine-stamped 1C matrices, a beautiful jacket, clean labels, and estate provenance from a serious San Francisco music collector. It also has some expected surface noise along with a few ticks during “Desolation Row,” so I have priced it accordingly rather than trying to represent it as a flawless, top-dollar collector copy.

While this should be obvious, needless to say, everyone's system is different, and I cannot account for what it will do in your playback environment, but on my system, it played exactly as described above, and as such is sold "as is".

BUY FROM A PRO! I am not just one of these guys trying to make a buck by throwing it up to see what sticks. I've tried to be as specific as possible with detailed information and I always try to price my records fairly based on condition and rarity. Because I too am a collector, I CARE about what I sell and getting you exactly what you paid for and in the condition advertised. I have a well established history of selling vinyl, many albums worth even more than this, some even in the thousands, with no complaints. You can buy with confidence here! Except for boxed sets and sealed items, albums and accompanying materials will be shipped outside the jackets to prevent against shipping damage.

A Note about Shipping Vinyl: This item will be shipped in a genuine "vinyl shipper", packed with extreme care, using cardboard stiffeners to ensure they are not bruised during transit, or you may pick it up here in Southern California and save the shipping expense. It will be sent by the carrier of your choice, insured against loss or damage.

ABOUT MY LISTINGS!
Here is another of my vinyl offerings... This is a fine collectible copy and will be shipped in a box with plenty of packing, insured against loss or damage. I am listing more and more every day... with over 10,000 albums in my home, it would take me until the year 2099 to listen to them all. I'm now 72... don't think I'll make it so something's gotta give!

I have a ton of great albums available! Use the link below to find them or go to my store and look under Music.

A NOTE ABOUT ME: I used to own and operate a high-end Audio Salon in the 80s/90s located in Pasadena, CA for over 12 years and never lost my appetite for High Fidelity audio. UNLESS STATED, most of the audio equipment and music I sell comes from my personal collection. I am pretty picky about what I own so if it was good enough for me, you'll most likely be ecstatic with your purchase. I promise everything I know about this item is in this description.

To see any of the other items I have for sale, click on SEE OTHER ITEMS near the top of the page right. And if you have any requests, by all means, send me an email; if I have it, I'll list it right away for you, no off eBay sales...

Having met eBay standards for excellence in trading, you may bid with confidence knowing you will get what you THINK you are bidding on! Please check my feedback. It is a record I am very proud of...

Why Are My Shipping & Handling Costs a Bit Higher than Other Sellers? Please Read on...

GUARANTEED DELIVERY OR YOUR MONEY BACK!
I really DO CARE about when and how your product gets to you. Because the post office is so incredibly inept, I ONLY SHIP domestic packages INSURED, which is AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDED in the shipping cost, and that is not free as the post office charges for it. If your parcel gets lost OR damaged in freight, your item will be replaced if one is available OR you will be completely refunded!

IMPORTANT MONEY SAVING TIP! If you are buying more than one of my items and would like to SAVE MONEY by COMBINING SHIPPING costs, I will be happy to do so, but eBay has now made it more difficult to get discounts by confusing people with "Buy it Now" and "Add to Cart" options on non-auction style pages. If you are buying one item from a seller use the Buy it Now. BUT IF YOU WANT COMBINED or FREE SHIPPING, DO NOT USE THE BUY IT NOW button! Instead, select ADD TO CART. Then use your BACK button on your browser and select the other items you want that qualify using ADD TO CART each time. When you are finished, look for the shopping cart icon at the top right corner of your eBay page and click on it. Find the blue button which reads COMMIT TO BUY & SEND REQUEST. Once done, the items will be held and I will create a single invoice with either combined or free shipping. NOTE: I cannot retroactively go back and combine items that are not purchased in this manner so PLEASE PAY ATTENTION.

Once you receive your invoice, payment is expected promptly! All of the payment info you need will be listed including multiple shipment options.

Some states will require sales tax to be collected. Ebay will collect such as required. I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS!
