Bob Dylan's not wanting to have this album released is perfectly understandable, and anyone who attempts to have this album hold a candle to any of Dylan's major albums - even relatively weaker ones like Planet Waves and New Morning, or his recent albums with his dying cat voice - will ultimately fail, and fail hard.

For hardcore Bob Dylan fans, however, this album isn't as expendable as allmusic.com claims. The beginning track, Lily of the West, is as good as anything that Dylan has sung with his Nashville croon and that can afford the listener some repeated listens. Mr Bojangles is sung with a strangeness that trembles through Dylans voice, but one that ultimately adds a certain degree of character to it which in a strange sense redeems it. And strangeness is primarily what gives Dylan '73 anything that one can call appeal. The songs taken from traditional numbers are generally the best on this album, and though they don't exude Dylans unique character as the covers do on his self-titled album they are pleasant numbers nevertheless. Big Yellow Taxi, a cover of Joni Mitchell, is all right; The Ballad of Ira Hayes, however, is as far removed from the Cash version as the Nine Inch Nails thought their song Hurt would be, and Spanish is the Loving Tongue is contemptible. Overall I'd say Dylan is half-great and half-terrible. As foolish as the producers who compiled this album were, they weren't stupid enough to where they wouldn't throw in some pleasing songs. Assuming that they learned a thing or two from Self Portrait.

Dylan fans shouldn't be averse to seeking this album out, especially if they garner their brownie points from knowledge as much as the music itself (fans who like Self Portrait have absolutely no excuse!). There are a multitude of albums that would come first in line, of course: but that doesn't mean that Dylan '73 somehow needs to be excluded from the line.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
