Brief Artist & Album Info: Dylans first studio album that featured an ‘electric’ backing band, a groundbreaking moment, and this title (for me anyway) is one of the very best albums he ever made, it started a chain reaction of brilliance that was maintained throughout all his 1960s records. Beautifully packaged in one of the classic sleeves of the era. Both cover and record only offer gentle clues to their vintage, the disc appears little played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on three large rear flipbacks. The back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day, includes the white polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal dulling. Light rim impression near the top and bottom, any creases very few and light. A small rub on the bottom right corner tip, but this attractive front has aged little and is a pleasure to view.

Cover Back: The back also remains impressive with any discolouration to the white card little and very light, just gentle traces near the left edge. Little aged at all in fact, the lack of rubbing and creasing to the card are considerable pluses. All three flipbacks are very neat indeed, remaining solid and clean, the ends sharp with barely any scuffs or grime. So a very fine back to match the lovely front.

Top Edge: No wear and reasonably straight, any bowing light.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with a little thickening seen viewed end-on. This mainly on the back edge that is a fraction proud of the front. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A magnificent spine that remains fully laminated and totally unaged, this is little short of perfect. Solid, straight, clean and with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn and also very well centred under the totally unscuffed or cracked laminate, as seen on my spine picture.

Corners: A small tip rub on the front bottom right as mentioned, little else. Excellent shape largely retained with no bashes.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive, early E.J. Day cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: mainly due to corner creasing. A plain white inner with a few small nicks on the window circles, the polylining clear and still fresh. All edges unsplit with no repairs required, this includes ‘FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: (or thereabouts). A few mainly light marks, most being surface types, fine and superficial with little audio affect. A tiny few sporadic ticks only, which are so hard to avoid totally on these vintage mono albums, the vast majority plays very well indeed with little unwanted. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with lovely fresh shine very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence, few popular mono records will survive without a few gentle surface blemishes. No heavyweight mono stylus have damaged or impaired the overall clean and impressive audio quality which remains impressive. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors, but not quite for the perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Dylan classic plays mostly above it’s fine visual grading with little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little, as stated a tiny few sporadic, light ticks that are difficult to avoid totally on such material and mode. With fewer louder passages for any blemishes to hide, a top pressing and more lightly played record is essential for maximum pleasure and this still makes the grade. Major sound degrading on popular mono records is common, but this has hardly any hint at all, and this being played on a revealing LP12 stereo front end for which this record was not really designed. Both channels are clean and sharp and devoid of any single channel mono noise or break up. Both vocals and backing crisp and precise with no tracking issues*. So the odd polite reminder that you are actually listening to – a vintage mono record now around or into its fifties. Little of any spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. For those who want an early mono copy of this legendary set, this will take a fair degree of beating. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended, unless perfection is mandatory, that on the earlier copies will always prove hard.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
