Die 'Bootleg Series' geht weiter: drei Jahre nach 'The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 The Witmark Demos (1962 1964)' erscheint mit 'The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)' eine Doppel-CD bzw. ein 4 CD-Boxset, das eine der kontroversesten Phasen der Singer/Songwriter-Legende von einer bislang unbekannten Seite zeigt. Das Album enthält 35 Raritäten und unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen, die überwiegend als Demos oder Alternativ-Takes im Rahmen der Studiosessions zu den Alben 'Self Portrait' und 'New Morning' entstanden waren.

'Self Portrait', Dylans zehntes Album, erschien im Juni 1970 und war sein erstes Werk, das von der Presse negative Kritiken erhielt (Greil Marcus Besprechung im Rolling Stone begann buchstäblich mit dem Satz 'What is this s**t?', Robert Christgau gab dem Album eine 'C PLUS'-Wertung in der Village Voice). Ungeachtet dessen erreichte 'Self Portrait' Platz vier der US Billboard Charts und erklomm die Spitze der britischen Albumhitliste. Einige der Songs auf 'Self Portrait' spielte Dylan gemeinsam mit einem kleinen Ensemble von Musikern ein, zu dem u.a. David Bromberg (Gitarre) und Al Kooper (Keyboards, Gitarre) gehörten. Produzent Bob Johnston versah die Basic Tracks anschließend in Nashville mit Overdubs - auf 'Another Self Portrait' sind die Original Session Master-Aufnahmen nun erstmals ohne Overdubs zu hören.

Nachdem er mit 'Self Portrait' sein Image als 'Stimme einer Generation' vorsätzlich erschüttert und gleichzeitig die Grenzen der Popmusik sowie seine eigenen erweitert hatte, kehrte Dylan mit dem ebenfalls 1970 veröffentlichten Nachfolge-Album 'New Morning' zum Songwriting zurück. Mit 'Another Self Portrait' erhalten Dylan-Fans nun die Gelegenheit, die wegweisenden Aufnahmen seiner künstlerischen Wandlung am Ende der Sechziger und Beginn der Siebziger Jahre neu zu erleben.

'The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)' enthält u.a. eine bislang nicht erhältliche Version des Songs 'Only A Hobo', eine Demoversion von 'When I Paint My Masterpiece', Coverversionen von Tom-Paxton- und Eric-Andersen-Songs sowie einige rare traditionelle Folksongs. Das Coverartwork gestaltete Dylan wie schon beim 1970er 'Self Portrait' wieder selbst. Das Album kommt sowohl als Standard Doppel-CD als auch als Deluxe 4 CD-Box (die erstmals den kompletten Mitschnitt von Bob Dylan And The Band auf der Isle Of Wight vom 31. August 1969 enthält) in den Handel. Darüber hinaus enthält die Deluxe Edition eine neu remasterte Version des 'Self Portrait'-Albums, sowie zwei Hardcover-Bücher mit Liner Notes von Greil Marcus. Die Vinylversion umfasst die 35 Stücke des Albums auf drei LPs und ein 12 x 12 -Booklet.

Einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf 'The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)' erhielten Dylan-Fans bereits anlässlich des Record Store Days am 20. April 2013, als eine limitierte 7 Single mit den Songs 'Wigwam' (Demo) und 'Thirsty Boots' (eine zuvor unveröffentlichte Aufnahme) erschien.
